    I am talking about FJ40, FJ45, FJ45V. From memory, produced at the same time, all three in our fleet, and all three with different diff ratios. And I think, different ratios again were used in the really early ones in the 50s and early 60s. Found out about it putting a diff out of an FJ40 into an FJ45.

    The "series" vehicles had 4.7:1 ratio diffs but changed to 3.54:1 with the Stage 1 onwards. This is probably what someone was refering to when they told you about the earlier diffs.

    A PO of the SIII 109 I had a few years ago decided to get more speed from the car by putting a Stage 1 rear axle in the thing, but forgot about the front diff

    Doesn't the Freelander have different ratio's?The slip is offset by the coupling in the tailshaft that s@#t themselves all the time. Pat

    105 series are 4.3:1, 79 series are 4.1:1 not 4.11

    My rangie's rear diff is 105 series with 79 series ring and pinion. Front diff is patrol 4.11:1.

    These ratios are near enough enough for me. Probably tyre wear or pressures could make as much difference.

    1HZ in the 79 are 4.3:1 and 1HD-FTE are 4.1:1 i believe. that sort of discrency is **** all in the scheme of things(4.1and 4.11)

    While slightly off the topic some friends on another farm had a Czechoslovakian "Farmliner" 4X4 tractor, the distributors somehow assembled one of the diffs with the hemisphere the wrong way around. When you put the machine into 4 wheel drive in mud the front wheels would go one way and the rear the other. On firm ground it would just stall.


    It was a great laugh to see this machine sitting in a mud hole, wheels spinning madly and going nowhere!
