machine work only cost 400 bucks with a hot wash and new cam bearings. so it came back spotless ready to put together. if you were just going to get rid of it an in car job would be fine but if your keeping it pull it out and strip it wash every thing twice even all the nuts and bolts

Is it better to go for full strip and see and replace or more economical to get a recondition engine swap? Is there such a thing and through whom? (canberra or sydney)
The end result of my lack of consultation prior to purchase is this. Engine is now being rebuilt. It appears someone had the head shaved - but went too far. 3 Pistons stuffed, head totally stuffed by incorrect clearances. How could the previous mechanic get things so wrong?? At least I have a reliable LR mechanic on the job now, who is replacing head, pistons, etc.etc Anyway - hopefully the beast will run like new when finished.

buy a writen off Disco from the auctions...
then sell the rest off and you might end up with a $1000 engine or better free one....

ive seen TDI disco's that have been rolled got for about $2-$4k

    Cheaper option....

I'm not sure if Morwood are that good on Landrovers any more - I assumed that the Tdi knowledge left when old Bill did...but would be interested to hear if this isn't the case.

I see that the 300Tdi is being rebuilt in any case, but with old Landrovers (and used cars in general) being worth bugger-all these days (a function of booming economy, cheap imports and 1 million new car sales each year), you'd have to argue that it's hardly worth rebuilding motors these days unless you can do most of the work yourself. E.g. I haven't had a single phone call for my $5K 200Tdi Disco and the motor's pulling harder than ever at 275K k - I don't think it'll have any problems seeing 500K k before a rebuild (my mate's has just passed 500K k and all it needs is new injectors...)

What's with all the suggestions I've had about rolled discos? You're not the first to suggest that one... what puzzles me is, are there that many rolled discos around? Are they notorious for rolling??

yea, a bit,, especially the older ones with out sway bars,,, happened quite a bit there for a while,, a combo of new type of vehicle(we will discount RR's here) inexperience, inattention, speed, and the luxo ride from a Disco.

first decent gravel corner, body rolls, foot hits brake pedal, over she goes,,

Disco's like alot of 4wd's are driven like a Sedan.... And guess what... they dont handle like one.....

So the wrong flick of the wheel and the wrong approach to a corner and whoops.... its on its roof....

Even i who used to Rally has almost put a Defender on its roof at high speed....
