    300tdi rings gone

Have a 1997 200k km disc tdi which is blowing oil majorly through oil filler cap. When cap lifted lots of blue smoke and splutter. 3rd owner - obviously not well maintained. Main head gasket also leaking. Suggestion has been made that engine is in for expensive overhaul. If not an engine fire could be on the cards. Is it better to go for full strip and see and replace or more economical to get a recondition engine swap? Is there such a thing and through whom? (canberra or sydney)

Good luck finding a crowd that sill do change over 300TDI engine and I would be thinking that this will cost you $$$$$ straight up.

Cheapest way out, find a second hand one from a donar car and buy it if it runs well and drop it straight in or even buy a whole donar car for spares and then work from there.

Once your up and going again, then look at rebuilding the old engine, strip it and find out what was stuffed as I think you will find that there will be quite a bit wrong with it if it's granaded at such an early age.

A TDI will not cost $5000 to reco if it just worn. There a basic engine and the only dear bit on them is the head but you can get one from England for $1200 if it is no good.Modern motors in Dungog have Quoted me around $4000 if the block and head are good. Pat

can this be done with the engine in the car? Can you get the sump off etc and then undo the bearing caps and push the pistons out the top?

    Not properly....

When one rebuilds an engine it should be tanked clean...

In car is the domain of car yards
