Disco 1 rear axle and flange differences

    Hi all,
this is all fairly new to me so go easy. I'm thinking of getting either 24 spline axles from a later model disco or a new HD set to replace my rear 10 spline set up. However, I see on the ashcroft site that there are thick flanges for my 92 disco and thinner flanges for later models. I thought that if I purchased some HD axles for my current disco that I would be able to swap them if I upgrade to a latter S1. I'm now confused. What are the differnces from early to later D1s and what's needed to have axles etc that are interchangeable? How easy is it to use 24 spline later model gear in my 92? Oh BTW I will be using a 24 spline detroit locker.

    Cheers,
    Pete

    hi

we put 24 spline axles into our 93 Disco fitted into JacMac lockers. Never broke any but recently replaced the axles with Maxis just in case.

I noted the spline on the 24 spline axles was a tad marked up though, but this may have been the case when they went in given they came out of a vehcile that had done over 300,000ks.

It is worth doing if you can get them cheap (ie, less than 100 dollars for 2) as they are stonger than 10 spline. Otherwise just bite the bullet and get the Maxis straight up and rest easy as they are way stronger - 700 dollars or so depending on Mal's mood.

PS while doing the locker, peg the diff to stop the pinion flexing away from the CW. Otherwise you'll just transfer the weak point to the CWP and smash it as it as the CWP is way too small for big tyres and lots of HP - heavy plod.

I was going to try the 24 spline disco axles but the only place here is Tas that have any want $250 for the rear axles alone. I am now looking at HD axles but would like to know about the different flange sizes and understand a bit more about the different axle flange set ups.

    Cheers,

The hub PCD where the axle bolts on is slightly smaller for the 24 spline stuff, need to change hubs aswell to suit 24 spline stuff, your replacing the centre to with something right?? you have to to change spline count

Shame your not in vic, I've got front and rear 24 spline diffs complete

So, if I buy HD axles that have integral hubs to suit I think they state 94-99 D1, they should bolt in to my diff housing. Yes, I'm putting a 24 spline detroit locker in.
