Have you ever had any of the usual TD5 issues or is the 250k fault free?
Guys,
Coming up to the 250 000km mark with my TD5 discovery 99' model and she's still going strong. BUT, the 'spigel' is as dry as (....) and transfer box is leaking at the seals.
To fix the seals they need to get the transfer case or gearbox out, is it a good time (taking the amount of k's in considerations) to replace the clutch and flywheel?

Isn't the flywheel the torsional type that's expensive, i.e., about $1500?

fly wheel will be dual mass if it doesnt look like it needs a grinding FFS leave that bit alone.
Yep replace the clutch if its out and grease the spigot with high temp moly before reassembly... If its only the Tcase that needs dropping you dont HAVE to drop the box just take the tcase off the back.
Depends on how much you WANT to do to it really.

As Studio54 has already said. i would like to hear what sort of run you have had outta your Td5 motor ?? any head trouble ?? did you replace the Plastic head dowels with the steel ones ??
It's been running pretty good. had to get the manifold machined after the studs broke. a few small issues but nothing serious (touch wood). Have been around aus, solo trip with no problems. O yes had to replace the prop shaft a few months ago.
The fly wheel think is expensive just over $1000 or some thing like that.
I have a feeling that td5's aren't really quite as bad as they are made out to be. Just the fact that you have one doesn't automatically confer that you will have to sell your house to repair it before it's done 250k.
I'm not denying that there have been problems in any way, just saying that those with problems are always heard the loudest. I sympathise with those that have had problems, but think we should acknowledge that there are people who have not had problems. There are a lot of them out there too.

Nice to see a positive thread on the TD5.
Any more people out there who have experienced few problems with the TD5?
I'm happy, if not nervous, with ours.
Then again I read plenty of negative posts about the Tdi and V8.
Nope, no probs. Did drop a transmission fluid line on the gearbox once - faulty connector.
