Driveline issues - swaps and options?

    before i start its a 1994 3.9 auto with the B/W transfer.

First, the easiest to repair but most anoying problem - the stupid rubber donut on the tailshaft, once again it has twisted and torn itself and the car has an bad vibration, what model rangie do i have to get the pinion flange and tailshaft off of to put a uni in there, Are all the pinion flanges the same spline?

2nd, is the viscous lockup transfer, while it seems to be working alright atm, i have already replaced the visous lockup unit once, and much prefer the operation of an LT230 - there is also a small crack in the bottom of the housing in my TC

And as of the last week, the auto has beed doing what it likes, its done it to me 3 times now, but it will stay in 1st it seems and not change gears, 1st and revers engage imedaitly and when its working, apart from shifting fairly hard though, pretty much all gears it seems to work fine.

I have a wrecked 95 disco with a zf and lt230 in it, but the car was fire damaged up the front, is it posible there is any dmage to the auto, or if i give it a good service before i put it in it should be fine?

Ive been thinking about selling it, but as we all do, i like it and just want to make it all work properly.

    1. AFAIK pinion flanges have different splines. Not sure what is in your rangie.

Had to get a fine spline flange and spacer for my 98 disco. And I had a classic rangie tail shaft.

Does the 95 disco have the rubber donut? If not, I would try pinion flange and tailshaft from it.

    2. Is the disco v8 or Tdi? If v8 you should be ok with the zf and LT230 from it.

Worth getting it serviced and checked for fire damage, but probably ok.

I was going to post up a similar question but thought I would add it here.

How do you tell if you need a fine spline or coarse spline pinion flange?

I tried to buy one last week and they asked me which I wanted.
The shop reckoned you couldn't tell without pulling the old one out to check but surely there was a year changeover.
    My vehicle is a 1994 Disco1 update.
My rubber donut is beginning to crack around the bolt holes. Only 5 months old.

My 92 RRC has a rear universal.
If the first gear hang up is first change of the morning, it is a sticking governor, which is the first indication of needing a rebuild.
If it hangs up while hot, I would be looking at a sticking kickdown cable that does not return to rest after having the accelerator depressed. Maybe its too near the exhaust and has partly melted the nylon inside.

Do you really want the clunky/noisy LT230 over a smooth quiet BW?
    Regards Philip A

the disco i have is 3.9 v8 aswell, it sticks whenever it likes in first, twice when cold, oncve when it was really warm, the disco, unfortunatly has the same donut setup.

And as for the lt230, atm yes, becasue the output seems to be worn in the auto and it clunks anyway, my old range rover with the lt230 was no better or worse than the b/w, and for the amount of proper 4wd'ing i do, the viscous will fail again soon and the lt230 a better option imo.

I've recently removed a prop shaft and (now) a pinion flange and spacer from a RRC so Dullbird could do a swap from donut to uni rear. The donor vehicle ( at Pick and Payless) was a 90 RRC - it has the same fine splines on the flange as later Disco's (mine included - 1995 model). However, I wanted a flange (and spacer - don't forget to fish it out as well) for a spare donut diff I have, and when I went to a 80's RRC, it had the coarse version - which is really coarse because it looks like a 10 spline axle. So the changeover date is somewhere between mid 80's and 1990.

Thanks. Didn't think it was just a coarse spline for the 10 spline axle units and fine spline for the 24 spline axle units. I thought the shop would have know that.

    Now to get the bits...

Edit: Does the 90 Classic have 24 spline axles?
