    Advice please.

Asking those who may have some experience with Daihatsu diesel in Land Rover.

This is an option open to me, if I can't find a Rangie, at the right price, to repower my S3.

A "GD"? series 2.8 ltr, normally aspirated diesel and 5 speed gearbox, (still in the 2 ton truck) for less than $1,000. This is apparently, the same engine, as in the early "Rocky"?

Remembering, my objective is a reasonable touring road speed of 90 to 100, ( 80 to 90 towing van) in good conditions. With reasonable economy.

Also, any information on this engines ability to cope with Bio-Diesel, would be appreciated.

    Thanks folks.

G'day All, I made my own adaptor plate way back in 1988 and repowered my Series 3 109 S/Wagon with a 2.8lt Diahatsu (cannot remember whether it was designated as ? DL or DG but it was 2.8 lt.
It went very well and returned around 28-32mpg depending on how hard you pushed it, I cannot help you with any info re Bio-fuels but i do know that 303Gunner uses Bio-Diesel in his Tojo, you could send him a PM his name is Tony.
The biggest hassle I had with fitting this engine was the EDIC motor, and the wiring that went with it, also it had a wire that if no Oil pressure it wouldn't start either, but i managed to get around all of that, I drove it for a few years and traded up to my 110 County which I still have anyway hope that was of some help/encouragement to you cheers Dennis
PS Damn good little engines those Diahatsu's, I do have a Factory Wksp manual for the engine but it was a tad pricey at the time if your interested.

    Thanks for that Dinty.

If I do get it, I buy the whole truck and drive it home.
So I only have to match the gearbox to transfer case.
    And engine mounts.
And ensure the steering gear is all clear, and, and.

But, generally the idea is to take engine and 5 speed gearbox and fit them to the Landy.
It's a runner, it should work.

One of the concrete pumps I used to work on was on a Diahatsu SH*% box with a 2.8 in it and the motor was about the only thing good about the whole thing.

Never touched it other than servicing and the thing had been around and around and around the clock on numerous gear boxes and diffs but the engine was never touched.

The body ended up falling off the chassis so they lifted the pump off and dumpped it on an Isuzu which gave them nothing but trouble.

It would be a great conversion, I dont think the gearbox would give you as much trouble as it did for us as the pump weighed in at around 2 1/2 tonne and then hoses on top of that so she was over loaded its whole life.

I dont know about Bio but I wouldnt imagine it would be a problem for any reason.

Dinty, I have a 2.8 Daihatsu diesel that I am considering fitting to my Series III, the adaptor plate, was that made to fit the Landy gearbox and Transfer case to the Daihatsu motor or was it to fit the Daihatsu motor and gearbox to the Landy Transfer case, I dont suppose you still have the dimensions or measurements to build the Adaptor, if you have could you send me a copy to Frank.Stanton@bigpond.com
    Regards Frank.

Only, there is quite a bit of engineering in that bit, not a fun job at all, the rest is easy. Find out the cost of that bit before you do anything else.

Hmm, the Landy transfer case end, I still have to look into. Why pull it apart, only to fill with dust, before I actually need to.

The little truck is no problem, typical truck with parking drum brake on the gearbox rear.
Remove afore mentioned parking brake, from Landy as well, Landy gets new disk parking brake fitted to diff front. Nice.
Makes room for shunting back, forth, up, down and around.
Make up "adaption" as necessary. Easy.

That part involves buying beer, to bribe mate for use of lathe, etc. Again, not difficult.
Yoke, uni, spline?, bearing sleave and housing, oil seal.
Should work. Line up carefully, keep any run out to below that already in the old girls transfer case.
There won't be in my machining, but, there already is in the Landy t\case, and most probably in the trucks gearbox.

Buy some Landy spares, and "marry" them, to the Daihatsu bits. Basically.
Make the Daihatsu gearbox, imitate the Landy.
It'll go together. I've just bought a nice big shiny new hammer for the job. I'll make it fit.

Hmm, with all the front off, to make it easier to work on.
Maybe some "Mackay Silent Rubber", for a slight body lift. Just an inch or so.
Maybe I could fabricate up some new spring shackle mounts. Give a choice of suspension lifts.

No. Get it going again first Shorty.

Thank's Jimbo, I'm pretty sure I can conquer it.
My biggest problem is access to workshop machinery, now that I am retired. I have to try to squeaze things in when friends aren't busy. Or, do a small love job in trade.
    Once again, no big problem.

Mcrover, thanks mate. People seem impressed by that little motor, so I think I'll go for it. The 5 speed gearbox is a real bonus. Fuel economy will be interesting to note.

    Kieth, Colorado? Thanks mate.
I'll check the site, I might get a radical idea or two, but unless I can get across to the other side of "Lake Pacific".

I think you will find the Diahatsu 2.8 is the same 2.8 used in hiluxes so parts should be easy to get.
