    Metal on Metal Sound

    Hi all,

I have a 1997 Tdi disco and recently had the timing belt, minor service and safety check done. On the drive home I noticed a high pitch metal on metal sound that went away when the brake was depressed slighty. My Dad was in the car with me but as he can't hear high pitched noises (to much time on a dozer and around heavy equipment) he was no help. By the time I got home 150km the noise had gone so we put it down to the brakes being adjusted and the pads contacting the disc slightly hence why the noise went away when the brake was depressed.

Since then the noise has come back a couple of times and I want to try and sort it out. It will still go away when the brake is depressed. Is it likely to be the brakes touching or is it something more sinister like a cv or wheel bearing?

If it is the brakes can anyone tell me why it comes and goes?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Dan

More likely a pad wear indicator touching the disc.

Would this be the case when the noise comes and goes. I don't know but I thought it would be constant.

Yep, probably. The fact that it disappears with light brake application is the giveaway.

Hmm, interesting I have the same noise in my rear wheel yet at last check my pads were 50% worn.

    I'll check them.

it might be some metal inpregnation of the pads or bad glaze in a couple of spots that are pinging off against the rotors when the brakes are off....

try a quick rub down of the pads on a smooth wet concrete slab and see what happens.

Thanks for the information fellas. Do any of you know what thickness the brake pads are when new, so that I can do a quick check on how much pad I have left.
