Lucky you dont own a GU pootrol, you would have killed him if the small puff from the 300 had that effect.
The 300s are so consistent on that puff of smoke on start up!, Poor old bloke hobbled behind me today in a carpark, just as i fired her upafter a massive coughing fit and a string of swear words about old polluting heaps of chit
, he managed to to get hobbling on his merry way again.
Its a funny thing with those engines, hot, cold, the amount of smoke on start up stays the same.

mine varys tho somtimes it puffs some time it does not
Mine always does
I always double check that nobody is walking across the rear as I start up, with no mufflers it scares them as well
I had mine parked down in Manly last weekend, just by an outside restaurant, started it up, gave everyone a lung full, who all turned and sent a few choice words my way, what do they expect?, they are having lunch on a footpath, next to a road, where cars park, and expect not to smell cars???
weird....
I have filled a car that parked behind me with black smoke as he parked in a way that not only was not a car park but was making it hard to get out.
Full throttle start and they smoke really well, right in his drivers window, thank god for lift kits and tall tyres.
Agree, In a small(ish) town where one may know most footpath people who could walk into the puff of black smog, it can be just a wee embarrassing.
But nonetheless, smoking of any description is now only allowed outdoors from public amenities, and I never try and start the old girl indoors at any time.
However, I have found that by applying a touch of accellerator as I turn the key, the annoying puff is much lessened.
Have to say though, the 300tdi does have a very nice firing up sound as the governor kicks in and regulates the revs.
