    Detroit locker question

    Hi all,
hopefully my last question on axles and detroits. Can I get some feedback from people who have used the detroit locker and 24 spline land rover axles. How long have you had the combo, what size and tyre type, and importantly how many breakages? I'm trying to make the budget stretch a bit further and thought instead of HD axles the 24 spline and a spare set might work for me.

    Cheers,
    Pete

I shall watch this one with interest I run a Detroit on a Salisbury with standard 24 spline axles and have done so for 18 months or so.
I have broken nothing but recently ordered some Maxi Axles because I understand if you break an axle it can break the Detroit.
Was probably always fairly careful because of the standard axles but even when I gave it more than I should I removed the axles to check for twist and found none.

    G'day Duane,
if Jeff Mac was more efficient I probably would have some HD axles by now. It did give me time to think about some standard 24 splines though. I did read that a broken axle could break the detroit, but I would like to hear from someone who has actually broken one. There seems to be many opinions on detroits and I just wonder how much comes from experience.

    Cheers,

    Hi Guys
I ran a detroit in a classic with Isuzu and 10 spline axles with the expected result . Broke 2 axles at different times but had no dramas with the diff on either (or any other ) occassion. I was running 33 inch mudders and 3.54 diffs. This is the rig that Maggot 4x4 now has but he wisely changed to 4.11 Cruiser diffs and uses ARB lockers now.
    Cheers

I had No-Spins in a HT GTS350 with Oldsmobile 4.11 diff and 370 hp at the wheels, in a '70 Dodge Challenger with 426 Hemi and probably 650hp at flywheel, and a White Road Boss, Detroit Diesel 8V92TA, Rockwell SSHD's with three way No-Spins in road train service. Never broke anything.

I have a Detroit locker and standard LR 24 spline axels in my Rangie. I run either 33" BFG MTs or 34" Simex JT2s with no problems.

DiscoWhite runs the same setup with 285 Silverstones - no problems either.

Thanks fellas. I'll give the 24 spline LR axles a go. I'll only be running 32 inch mtrs. Now I just need to find some axles.

    Hey Pete!
    Be carefull!
Before I went with 35 spline (1.5") (in a Sali) I broke an MD 24 spline and ruined the Detroit. It didn't seem like a big obstacle but as the truck hopped I knew I was in trouble. Regardless of who you buy the axles from you should take care with a Detroit Locker as the stock 24 spline aren't half of what a stock Sals axle is much less even comparable to the MacNamara or MD (or mine) Axles available.
As far as stock Disco or D-90 24 spine axles breaking I've managed to to pay for my bad habits from broken LR 24 splines.. I actually saw (in the band saw) the shafts and use them for round stock on the lathe projects around the shop.. Try to saw a JM,MD or RT shaft..
