300 Tdi Sudden transient power loss

I just got back from a drive to Sydney (from Melb).

Thrice on the trip I experienced a sudden & transient loss of power on the 300 Tdi (Defender with 136,000km), it felt like fuel starvation and occured when travelling uphill (steeper inclines), a quick look at the speedo showed my speed had crept to 115 kph (actual GPS Speed).

The fuel tank is clean, was full(ish) and I've only used BP fuel.

The previous owner installed a fuel catalyst cylinder thingy in line (pre engine bay filter).

Could it be restricted fuel flow at high demand due to the catalyst, or are these symptoms of something more sinister? Otherwise it ran fine. Economy wasn't a great as I hoped, but I had to keep up with my wife in a Range Rover, otherwise I would have been closer to the 100kph than the 110 kph on the Hume.

Thanks, and I hope your advice isn't costly.

Fuel blockage caused by the inline snake oil thingy, the catalyst????

Could also be the turbo hoses are holed and your boost pressure is not up, happened to me once, an incline made it go backwards, but it wasn;t noticeable on the flat.

thats all I can think of in the similar problem line,
    at the moment.

I've had similar issue a couple of times over the years
power comes back but later problem reoccurs
mine has always been fuel supply issue (filter or similar)
it's amazing how quick a filter can restrict fuel if there is something in your system to block it
    Check the fuel catalyst thingy

check the lift pump and front filter.

the lines to or from the lift pump are known to split and leak fuel out or let in air etc etc

only done it on last tank of fuel?

check the sludge filter at rear, look for diesel bug, water, any other crap.

Put in a new fuel filter. Check gauze filter in the top of the lift pump, it's just under the big screw on the top. Check for leakage from lift pump or fuel line connectors around fuel pump - as mentioned above.

Check sedimenter at the back for gunge. Check if little plastic screw/tap on the bottom of sedimenter is stuffed, pull off sedimenter and clean out, and replace O rings.

Check that fuel filter hasn't come loose.

If it's only happening on inclines it sounds like a minor problem rather than a major one. Small air leak rather than a major one.

    Cheers

    Thanks guys,

    The electric switch was okay.

The fuel sedimenter (rear filter) had no water or dirt when I removed the bottom plug. I still need to get some O-Rings before pulling it out.

    The Intercooler hoses look clean.

The fuel hoses from the lift pump to the filter to the catalyst to the fuel pump seem a bit hard, with external cracks, so I'll get those replaced and check the filters & probably remove the catalyst.

I'll check the lift pump too.
