    Throaty and knocking

    99 TD5 Auto

On my way to Kakadu today and about half way there from Darwin I noticed that engine started sounding throaty almost like the exhaust had a leak.

Water was Ok as was oil, letting the car idle it sounded like a nocking noise, but I could not detect where from.

Decided to return back to Dawin but only got another 40 or so KM's before I noticed my back window and caravan getting covered in oil.

I pulled over and saw large amounts of oil running of the bottom of the bell housing. Turned of enging and got towed back to Darwin.

Car still starts but very throaty and knocks alot. No seeming loss of power and oil and water still look OK.

Oil is no longer running out and I can't find any obvious leaking externally on engine.

Sounds like some hip pocket pain. Any ideas?

Do you think what you thought was oil may have actually been diesel?

Grab the exhaust pipe while cold below the joint to the exhaust manifold, can you rattle it?

Its the auto trans. The pump and converter are stuffed.

The good thing about it is that now I will be getting rid of it.

I actually feel releived. The most expensive to purchase, the most unreliable and the most costly car I have ever had.

I am going to get myself something that does not have a single rover/british part in it so I can have some more reliablilty.

Well mate, that's a real bugger Shame to spoil your trip and be a costly on at that. I hope your next vehicle doesn't let you down like that thing has. All the best for a decent repair and trouble free motoring in the future.

Bad luck about the car. I may be wrong but isn't the transmission ZF. Made in Germany. They seem to be highly regarded by all that use them. Dont think you can blame Rover for that failure. My auto did over 400,000 kms regularly towing very heavy loads before a rebuild was needed.

This is the second gear box failure and I am very careful about how I treat and tow with it. I service it regularly and generally only tow in 3rd.

Its was rebult about 15 months ago.

I am going to go for something 4 litreish. I am over small engines

    G`day John

    Not good i don`t blame you .

Has a reason for the failure been given , they don`t generally just fall to peices ?

Out of interest how many Ks has it done in total ?

Also how many since the rebuild ?

    Cheers

You had better give us the rebuilders name so we don't get outs done there.

Surely it would be under some sort of warranty at 15 months.

I'm surprised. The German ZF box is pretty reliable and well proven unit. It's been used in LR since the mid-Eighties.
