Thread: CB Radio placement

I didn't want to drill the dash either so I bought a Uniden with a detachable face. The main unit is in the wheel well under the floor. The head unit is taped to the dash.

I use a GME remote head and have the head only behind the transfer lever under the cup holder.

If I did it again I would use the new GME where everything is on the handset.

screwed it to the back of the cubby box, as usual.
ran a remote speaker up to just below the coin box area (RHS). looks very neat.
unless you constantly flick between channels, why do you need to see the front panel?

Although a D1, the layout is pretty much the same, i have a gme tx3400 remote head model and the head unit is double sided taped under the cup holder and the main unit is siliconed inside the flip down fuse cover lid. I dont have an external speaker but the sound actually seems to come out from behind the binnacle.

There's not a lot of places you can put a non remote head unit. The side of the transmission tunnel is popular - its OK but never looks tidy IMHO, and can intrude on leg space. Overhead console - yeah looks cool but I'd be concerned about the weight up there - plus the mic cable flopping around in the line of vision would be a PITA.( well it would be for me )
As Pedro says, the back of the cubby box is a reasonable option for a Disco. It's easy to get the power & antenna wires there. If the speaker is self contained in the unit also makes it easy to distinguish the CB from car radio audio, ( and in a TDi engine noise ) because its coming from slightly behind.
You do have to take your eyes off the road to change channels that's the only problem. Generally I have a passenger to do that.
Here's my setup. Mine's DI but D2 is probably similar. The radio is hung on a piano hinge off the cubby lid screws. Saves having to drill holes in the back of the cubby box.

Mines going in on tuesday, into the overhead area where sunroof controls would be ( useless idea if you have a sunroof of course ), it means drilling screw holes into the plastic, but that's only an issue when you take it out, even then a replacement from the wreckers is $100, very convienient place to have it..

I've fitted mine (slimline Uniden model) into one of the map pockets above the windscreen. Looks ok there and also not in general view when scumbags come looking into the car. Antenna cable will run down the inside of the door pillar so should be hidden from view nicely.

His is single DIN size so probably won't fit there
