    Series Gearbox

Just wondering if the gearbox between a series 3 rover 6 is the same as a 2a 4cyl?

The one in my Ex Mil series 3 is a bit average, but i have a spare for my series 2a Ex Mil Workshop. Or should i just get the Series 3 rebuilt then i know it is good.

Can i just swap them over? Is it a hard job?

    Thanks

The bellhousing differs, Wazza. And of course the Series 2a gearbox doesn't have synchro on all gears. I can't remember the number of bolts, but the 6 (and the 1.6 and 2l fours) have a a different bolt pattern. Otherwise the same.

When are you going to come look at the spare vehicle I have in my backyard? Then you could have yet another 2a box!

As above, Wazza - same gearbox ratios 6 or 4, Series 1 through 3. The only difference between a 6cyl and 4cyl gearbox is the bellhousing. (edit - and the gear lever but that's easily swapped)

I thought you'd sold a vehicle to make space. Oh, that's right, you've already bought one to fill it again - nature abhors a vacuum!

    Dont you know it.

Yes i sold the Fender but the Series 3 came home to fill the space.

Now Looking at a D2 for a family car.

So once i get the Series 3 GS up and all good i can get rid of the Civi series 3 that is in the car port for parts.

Then i can go back and work some more on the series 2a Workshop.

So if anyone wants a partly stripped series 3 civi model let me know.

Scrambler - not quite correct there were a number of ratio changes starting in the 3rd gear in 1950 from 1.490:1 to 1.377:1
    The suffix A and B gearbox has 1st gear ratio 2.996:1 and 2nd gear ratio 2.043:1 with 3rd 1.377:1
    where the suffix C and later has 1st 3.6:1 + 2nd 2.22:1 and 3rd 1.5:1

In the early series 3 boxes there was a weakness in the casing and sometimes blew the reverse gear idler shaft out the side of the box. So avoid the early series 3 boxes if you can.

But just to clarify Diana's post,
While ratios changed over time, there was no difference between the six and the four at any time, other than the bell housing and the gear lever, both of which can swap.

The 1/2/2a box can swap with the S3 box provided you either fit the S3 bell housing and clutch mechanism or modify the plumbing to use the 2a clutch mechanism, but again noting that the bell housing is different between the four and the six, although unless I am mistaken, is the same for Series 1 and the six (may be a stud needs changing).

    Yup

Pretty much wot John D said.

Although the changing of the bellhousing can require changes to the front layshaft bearing and the housing for the clutch throw out and the sealed throwout unit if you are changing between suffix letters (but not within the same gearbox suffix letter)
