    Diff Ratio's

    HI all,

    Would be interested in knowing what diff ratios people on this site would be running with 35" tyres ? I Run 35" Maxis with beadlocks on my Ser 1 Disco 3.9V8 Auto, It really Tends to drag and kick down alot on a small rise in the road and fuel economy is not that good with the 3.5 ratio, I have a set of 4.7's that I can put in it but I am told that it will be great off road but any higher speeds will be more of a problem ? I have done some research and I'm told that the 4.1 is what I should be running ?? but at over $1000 per diff for the crown wheel and pinion set I would like to see what other user are running and give me some feed back ?
    I have a set of 35" BFG all terain's on my ser 3 Ute, when I fit these up it is better (without the beadlocks and extra tred the weight is much less).

    On another note, If anyone is running 35" Tyres on a 3.9 what sort of fuel economy are you getting ?

    4.11's will bring you back to standard with 33's, and then 35's will bring it out again by a few %. I think it is 4.3 which will correct a 35. I run 4.11 in a rover diff for mine. The problem with continuing to lower the diff ratios is that the gears become weaker. As I understand it, the 4.11's despite having a smaller pinion (and so loaded area on the crown wheel) than the 3.54, the strength is regained by better metallurgy. 4.7's in a Rover diff I would expect to be seriously pushing the friendship with 35" tyres. From what I have found with a TD5 Auto, is that 4.11's are fine with 35's, though I would not expect that to be the case with a manual gearbox.

    The 4.11:1 ratio are an after-market replacement for the Rover crownwheel and pinion.

    Another option which may be cheaper is the 3.9:1 ratio found in late 1950's/1960's Rover 3 litre P5 cars. They use a 10 spline axle the same as most classic Range Rovers.

    what did you have to do to fit 35 on your disco
    what i mean did you have to put a big body lift on it mate

    Why not keep the 3.54 in the diffs for ease and change the high range gearing in the t/case to the gearset out of a fender would be cheaper and simple to fit

    I fitted a 40mm Body Lift, 2" Suspension Lift, cut about 2" out of the guards about the body lift was without other major mods. I have done a few before with no body lift and bigger suspension lift but they dont drive as nice (to me anyway) I fitted 100mm ABS Scorpion Racing Flares and get full Articulation out of them. Flares are a bolt through style giving much better looking finish and makes it easier to cut the flares.

    Hmmmmmmmm.... now this is the info im chassing, what is involved in that ? Any more info ?

    Yep get a std 1.3 to 1 gear set from a fender lt230 and swap it with yours and u should get the reduction ya need my bro has a county with the 1.3 to 1 high range and he's running 37's with 3.54 diffs and its ok tho could be just a little lower

    That's 1.4:1 high range, it also only changes high, so you still lose out on low range

    I run 4.11:1 Kam gears
