Thread: Fairy o/d for LT95 are they any good ?????

I had a Fairey OD in my S3 LR 6 cyl for 18 years and only once did it have to have some bearings needed replacing. I originally used ordinary gearbox oil in it but after a few hours it would be nearly boiling so I used a Moreys synthetic oil with no problems. A mod was done to the OD, I forget the exact details but it allowed oil to be thrown up to the rear of the OD to lubricate the rear gears/ bearings. As the S3 came with a gearbox temp gauge the drop in the temperature was noticed when using the OD. When the 6 cyl was replaced by a 186 and higher ratio diff pinions added I could cruise at 90km with better fuel figures that the standard LR 6 could produce.
Advantage was the OD could be used on all gears and in hilly country the 3rd gear with OD was often the best gear.

I've had both the fairey and toro O/D's and didn't have any trouble(the toro was new) but many other people have. Pat

Yep im aware of that thats why i havent purchased a R380 ....
Tho the GKN would be nice i think id rather spend the dollars on somthing else like a good LT95 with the .996 to 1 gear set ....
Tho mine only has a prob in the t/case so i mite just fit new bearings and reshim it and see how it goes ......

Isn't a LT95 a 4 speed box without overdrive, while the R380/LT230 is a 5 speed box with overdrive?

That's why I reckon an LT-95 with a GKN would be a better option because that would give you a better gearbox but with added overdrive.

I had a V8 County with the LT-95 and thought it was a great box. 1st is quite low, I used to set off in 2nd on the road, and the spread between the gears seemed to work very well with the V8. Didn't have any trouble cruising at 100-110kmh though it would definitely benefit with an overdrive.
