    Can a 3" exhaust make a TD5 overboost ?

curious if this is so, and how it would do it.

No, the ECU won't let it, in fact if you try to increase the boost manually, when it gets to the point it goes over the max boost of 17 the ECU will put the car into limp mode, to get increased boost you need an attachment to tell the ECU that the boost is normal, discowhite has this little black box in his TD5.

Also the TD5 Disco is even harder to do.

    thanks RB.
I was curious as word from a Land Rover dealer was that a 3" pipe would cause overboosting, and I couldn't see how as my understanding was that it was ECU controlled.

ermmmm under the right failure modes it can....

IF you have everything happening just so and you stomp the noisey pedal the lack of restriction after the hiar drier will let it spool up very very quickly which will momentarily cause an over boost condition.

off the top (generically) on top of the free flowing exhuast if the waste gate was sticky, the MAP sensor was a little sluggish, the turbo was top notch, the air filter mickey mouse and you had say 5PSI on while cruising in 5th then pulled a snap change and floored it on the way through the shift then your a prime candidate for an overboost situation.

Its not going to be a case where the new 3 inch exhaust is the sole culprit for over boost occouring but it might appear that way if it was the last thing that was stopping it from happening, much like its always the goal keepers fault if the opposing team score a goal even tho to get into a position to shoot they had to get through a line of forwards, half backs, and a pair of full backs. (Im talking field hocky btw)

I'm not copping that one, as I was centre forward at school. It was my mate Chris fault, he was the fullback

momentary will be sub one second and it wont continue as the MAP will tell the ecu to turn the fuel off and stick it in limp mode.

Damage should be nill as on paper and in theory the whole engine should be capable of hanging together at 28psi for short periods.

and when I say overboost in the example Im giviing id make a WAG at it only getting as high as 19psi which is far enough past the threshold to put the ECU in panic mode
