Guys,
Judging by loud bang tonight I am expecting to pull out a broken rear axle tommorow, so was wondering about thoughts of replacement. As I believe Maxi axles are around $900 and a complete diff/axle kit is around $1900 am thinking of getting the lot if axle is gone.
Does Mal have a website??
What are other decent options?
Cheers
Craig
but if an excuse to get a maxi

Craig,
I was quoted $3800 just for a Maxi rear, where did you get the $1900 from?
If true go for it
but if not
go the ARB Airlocker , Maxi Axles and flanges..
You can get spares for the airlocker at any ARB store, its way cheaper and the only diff invasion is a air hose on top instead of a large actuator welded to the housing.
If you buy the flange set it makes a huge difference to the drive train even if you don't replace the front axles ,just bolt on the new flanges.
Good luck your gonna have a new car which ever you choose![]()
yep Wayne it was..but the have to weld the actuator to the diff housing and lots of labour involved.. So it was $3800 for the rear diff including , diff lok, axles and flanges or it was $1000 for axles and flanges allone and $3000 for front and rear air lockers
$4000 for both or $3800 for one..it was a no brainer![]()
Hang the expense,Go the Maxi, you will never look back.my R/R has them F&R,had them for years never had a problem.![]()
Are some of you talking Salibury and some Rover?
For a Rover its about $2400 Fitted but do not know Salisbury.
200 Extreme would be Salisbury N'est pas?
Regards Philip A
From memory I think the quote was from Coopers. Will wait for replies. That was for the kit plus freight and to fit myself. If I bought the front was about $3400 for both.
May not need though, pulled out axles last night (well the kids did, 11yo girl and 7yo boy, and they did all the work except cracking and tightening bolts). Axles like new, no metal in diff oil, so will be dropping gearbox, trans case oil and checking today.
Drives ok if not better than before. May have been a bad sticking handbrake or possibly disc pad. I was sure we had broken metal. It reverbrated right through the whole car. Have had the sticking handbrake before and nothing like this one. Prop shafts are all Ok and have drive with centre diff out and in high and low 4wd. Jacked up both sides front and rear and with normal movement wheels rotate opposite in gear.
Go figure.

What I usually do is before taking off, I make sure the car is rolling slightly to indicate to me that the handbrake has fully released. Once it didnt, and I got out and pushed the car damn hard and eventually it did 'crack' the grip.
Me too. Front is about 3 years old, rear I guess is nearly 20 yo (older style maxi with round axle flange) which I inherited off my 2nd Rangie when I bought it and ket it ever since.
Only problem is that the actuator on the older rear maxi would jam and it needed some adjustment as the piston would go back too far and it would either engage and not disengage or vice versa. Also pulled it to bits, honed the bore with one of those brake caliper honing tools (just big enough) and it works better than it did in the time I've had it. Also being full of water and crap didn't help either
I'll be taking them to the next Rangie too if that arises, too damn expensive to sell with the vehicle
