Another key question.. the surf key.

Hi good folk, I get in the water a lot and rather than stashing my remote key fob under a rock I want to use a key without the central locking/immobiliser.

    I have a 02' D2 wich has the key/remote all in one.

I got a key copied off this (one I can chuck in my wetsuit pocket) and it does lock/unlock the car.. but I'm worried to use it without pressing the button on the original.

    What do I do here?
If I use the plain key to lock the car whist I surf is the alarm going to go off, or worse immobiliser kick in?

    Please help.

    Rich.

There was a thread on this site only a couple of days ago. It was about D2 alarms going off by themselves.

I think the end result was to lock it with the key and the immobiliser will be set but not the interior motion sensor.

It would be wise to do a 'try it and see' session.

Same as a D1, if its a hot day and i leave the windows down a little too much the if its windy the alarm goes (motion sensors) but locking with the key is fine.

Do i need to keep the remote key in the car while I use the blank metal key and ensure I press the remote key once I open the car with the metal one?

Yep, my mate simon had one for his rangie key fob.. he had to shake the water out of the key, dry it in the sun and eventually it worked untill the internals corroded!
    Thanks though!

No I would not think so unless you wanted to go shopping and arm the full system.

Try it out and see. For the first time or two keep the remote key hidden in the vehicle somewhere just in case.

First off... Locking with the key prevents the volumetric sensors from being activated and the doors from being deadlocked (unless BCU programmed otherwise).

As for a safe option if you are only surfing then I'd look at a very small Pelican case. They make them for photo cards, mobile phones and iPods etc nowdays and the should be safe to a depth of several metres (e.g. http://pelican.com/cases_detail_specs.php?Case=0940)

Bassifier did you ever find a solution?

I'm thinking the same thing -

I tried mucking around with locking the car without the fob but the alarm goes off - I haven't tried a "fobless" key though.

I may have to buy one of those surf lock thingos

Surf Lock - Car Key Security Padlock

for $70 (!!) (I think there is a Master lock version too) but it just looks like a target shouting "the keys are in here!" for baddies...

I just had a look but couldn't find one for pics. But, you can buy a key case for scuba diving with, they are captive oring sealed. I've had one past 60m successfuly, and they don't crack until past 100m. Big enough to fit the FOB in, they are capsule shaped. I'm going into St George Underwater on the weekend and will put some on order for myself, so I'll make sure he's getting some extras.

I'll let you know how much exactly, but they're in the vicinity of $15-20.
