Thread: Swapping Defender Indicator Stalk to other side

The self cancelling in one direction is often because whoever refitted the steering wheel last did not centralise the self cancel switch.

Pull the wheel off and you'll see the blue ring that the striker on the steering wheel locates into.
Push the indicator stalk into one of the directions(dosn't matter which one).
Now turn the blue ring in that direction untill you feel it "click" the indicator stalk.
Now if you turn it back the other direction the stalk should cancel.
Try this the other direction, if it dosn't cancel within the same amount of movement then the ring reeds to be turned 180.
When you have an equal amount of movement before they self cancel, ensure the notches in the blue ring are vertical an carefully refit the steering wheel so that the striker fingers slot into the ring.

If none of this workes then your indicator stalk is ratted an you need a rew one.

Hope this helps, I've done this to dozens of 110's that wouldn't self cancel to fix the problem

Thanks - new fix on me - mine has been that way since I got it, and I assumed it was the switch faulty, but the cost is ridiculous considering it still switches, so I have not fixed it. I'll probably try it this afternoon.

The traffcator on this County I just bought is set up in reverse. The headlight insignia is upside own, but thats nothing.
I can take pics if you like.

I did this to my rangie a while back, I found I could pull apart the existing wiper switch and reconfigure it to work the other way around.

It involves pulling the spade contacts out and shifting them from the top to the bottom, flipping the metal plate which restricts wand movement too.

My 110 self cancels too early when turning right. As soon as the wheel starts to return, such as when you just start to turn it goes off. Is this problem able to be solved by the method you have outlined or is this just another Defender idiosyncrachy?

Convert the Jap cars to the LH indicator then it will match the rest of the world....

Only a few country's have the indicator on the RH side..... we are one...

Thanks DeeJay. It was your other post that promted me to ask how this is done. You are the only other person I have come across who has a vehicle with them swapped. Like you, our previous owners did the swap.

Does the cancellation work correctly turning both left and right ?

Thanks for the offer of the pics. I'm really after any pitfalls with what is involved in doing the swap.

If it helps, the "cancel" trigger on the rangie steering column is clipped on. It can be simply pushed around to centre it so they turn off evenly each way.

I drove around for two years with them not cancelling before I found that. I thought it was welded on.
