    Oil filter BPV settings

    I entered the Volvo part # Joel kindly supplied into the Fleetguard and Baldwin X Reference just as a matter of interest and came up as Fleetguard LF-3400 and Baldwin B-163, the BPV settings were 9.4PSI and 8PSI respectively. Now the BPV settings for the Fleetguard LF-4016 and Baldwin B-74 which X referenced for ERR 3340 came up as 17.4 PSI and 20PSI, does anyone know the correct BPV setting for ERR-3340 and would it make any difference whether you used the filter with the higher or lower BPV setting?

    I have entered this in one of the other current oil threads but the ERR3340 replacements from Fleetguard that I got were:

    LF3311 (7.98psi)
    LF3376 (17.4psi)
    LF3378 (36.26psi)

    As for the BPV if you were to fit the 36.26psi model to a 3.9 V8 they only run at 40psi @ 2500rpm at operating temp so would they even be able to trip the BPV? Would you starve your engine of oil when the oil is cold and thick or the filter is clogged?
    That is just my assumption anyway.

    I asked this question some years ago of a Puralator tech guy when I could get L20018 filters which were dimensionally the same as err3340s but had a BPV setting of 8-11 psi. He replied that their correct application for this was their L25195 which had a BPV setting of 14-16 psi but that he didn't see any harm would come of running the lower setting. Mann-Hummel list their W930/20 as an equivalent with a BPV setting of 1 bar (about 14psi I think) & Wix list their 51068 with a setting of 8-11. It is my understanding that if you can't get the exact equivalent you're better to go for a slightly lighter setting. That way you are at least assured of oil flow.

    yep, agree with Shinz, been down this road a long time ago. Tried to get the Mann filter as it has the best specs for a dedicated ERR3340 replacement, but the local distributor is worse than hopeless........
    and I don't think the Purolator L25195 is even available here. BTW, Purolator don't actually make that filter. The specs the engineers in the US provided me strongly suggest it is either a UK Delphi (the OE ERR3340 filter, or at least the ones I've seen) or maybe SOGEFI/Coopers. I have all the filtration specs for these filed away somewhere, think I might have even posted them here years ago.

    I became frustrated trying to source a decent filter, so in the finish I just hit the top of the diff with the angle grinder and have been running Donaldson P169071's for the last three or so years as I then have the absolute best media I can get. The diff has juuuuuust kissed the can on a few occasions over that time so that there is the tiniest of marks on the bottom. Also run the same filter as the full flow one on our Patrol and use a genuine parts one for the combo filter. The ADBV's are crap for a premium filter, (nitrile and they don't seal ) but it isn't an issue on the Defender. BTW, these are assembled
    by Champion Laboratories in the US using Donaldson media, as are Fleetguards equivalent.

    I take it rick that the Donaldsons with this same media don't come in a smaller size

    nope. They either make them to fit CAT/Cummins/DD, etc or the standard US Chev or Ford size and that's it, although I was told a while back that they will be introducing the synthetic media across more of the range as time goes on.
