    In metric the standard pipe is 60mm. 2.5 inch is 64mm. Be careful in that most exhaust places can only do imperial pipe sizes. Before you cut up your original pipe, consider trying stevo_62's idea first - at least you can find out the cheaper way if doing that gives you the increase in performance you want- before you outlay big bucks.

    TDI pipe is 2 1/4" ID

    TD5 is 2 1/2" ID

    2 1/2" mandrel on a TDI with a better box / no box is the way to go...

    If you want, fit a 3" dump then down to 2 1/2" and you'll get all the benefits with less cost.

    3" is overkill for a TDI, even a TD5....

    And for the record...
    2.5" = 63mm Nominal 3120mm/sq
    2.25" = 57mm Nominal 2463mm/sq
    2.375" = 60mm Nominal 2827mm/sq
    3.0" = 76mm Nominal 4536mm/sq

    , Mine is doing exact same thing , from inside the cabin there is a lot of rattling and as you said it sounds like a Tractor. so 3" Dump down to a 2 1/2 " is way to go with no Box hey , thanks old chap.

    Exhaust guy's logic was being a little bit longer (the original was 8" I believe) reduces the stress on the joint.

    Mine's a 94 and he said it looks like it is probably the original, so 250K over 13 years isn't bad anyway.

    If you put the passenger window down it will be even more noticeable. Not a good sound, something like a tractor fart without balls is probably the best way I can describe it. At first I thought I had a hole in the muffler or pipe somewhere but a quick look underneath revealed all. It got a lot louder after our last run to Adelaide (800km return)

    Ricks spot on i measured mine before i had it done 2.375" OD.

    I fitted a 2.5" from the turbo back with no muffler or resinator its loud and drones abit but it certainly helps especially with pump mods.

    I have standard with the muffler removed and it does go better,the only thing is it sounds like a wheel bearing is failing when you drive through a tunnel. Pat
