    I'm starving!

Here's the latest on my poor 2a diesel:

Tightened up all fuel unions and installed new fuel hose. Fuel now runs:
Tank-> lift pump -> filter -> injector pump-> injectors -> returns to tank.

I've degreased the engine and there is a slight fuel weep at number 4 injector but I can't get it any tighter.

It has 3/4 tank of new diesel and the filter was replaced recently.

It drives around nicely, pulling up hills in 3rd at full throttle. Then it can stall under light load or heavy load, unexpectedly. The fastest way I've found to re-start it is to pump the handpump 40-60 times and then restart it with the key. That's usually sufficient to get me home without any more stops.

So why does it starve itself of fuel and require me to hand-prime it to restart?
It's off to Land Vehicle Spares next month for a full service, but it's a long trip there and I don't want to take 4 hours getting there!

sounds like it might be sucking in air from somewhere before the pump......till it gets an airlock......

    Sounds like it I reckon.

Do you have a dual fuel tank switch or a fuel cock that could have a failed seal? Or a seal in the lift pump?

Lastly some crud in the fuel tank that floats around then gets caught in the intake pipe momentarily?

thanks heaps - I'll have a look later in the week.

zook, if it's sucking air from such a simple fuel delivery setup, what else can I do but tighten all the hose clamps??

    G'day Gromit68

It could be sucking air from either the filter bowl to filter top (through a poor rubber rim seal) if so wipe it with grease then refit or it is sucking air through the line to filter threads, if so wrap them with teflon tape then refit. as they are usually fitted with CAV filters this is a known air sucking problem the weaping injector could be that the injector to head washer is worn or ill fitting, if so get a full set of replacement washers, both the Copper and the Steel washers are only $1.10 ea from Landrovers.com.au DL132 & DL133 (their Part No's) in their parts book p45

    Hope that helps

    cheers

if priming it helped.....i just thought it may have had air in the fuel system......

    otherwise.....considering you had diesel bug.......
you have a blockage somewhere....either in the tank.....or on a wire gauze
    filter in the system somewhere......

did you clean out all the gunk from the fuel lines and tanks after you killed off the diesel bug......?
can you see in the fuel tanks using a flash light.......?

might need to blow out the fuel lines again.....
and check the inlet to the injector pump.......and also the injectors themselves......
may have a fine mesh filter on the inlet side........
