    Viscous coupling replacement.

Recently I posted questions about the cv joint in my 91 classic.
Turns out that it wasn't the problem and it was my viscous coupling being seized.(according to my mechanic)

He has disconnected the front drive and recons if I drive around like that for a few weeks it may unseize.

Anyone heard of this? whats your thoughts?

He has quoted me an evil price to replace the coupling so I'm looking for an after market part...anyone got a heads up?

One last question..after doing a search it seams a lot of people replace the whole transfer case at this time...I havent had problems so far and the car has done about 280K what do you guys think?

    Thanks in advanced.

I cannot see that happening - as the VC ages and is worked hard, the fluid inside changes and basically stays in "locked up" mode - once they are dead they normally stay that way.

In theory they should be able to be reconditioned by cleaning out the fluid and putting in new stuff but no does it that I know off and they are basically a sealed unit.

They are expensive but can be sourced aftermarket but still expensive - if it were me I would consider replacing with a standard transfer and cdl.

I have heard of that before - dont know how successfull it is thou. About 3years ago, a genuine landrover VC was just under 1k. But you may as well recon the whole unit - new silent chain, sprockets and bearings etc. Cost will be around 3.5-4.5k.

Thanks guys, Ive had prices of $650 for a secondhand to $1200 new. I'll check out ashcrofts and the other OS suppliers to try and get a recon at a good price.
Cant see the value in a second hand job and cant afford a total overhaul either.

I also will be keeping my hands feet and legs crossed hoping that it unseized......I must admit I am dubious but I will be happy to be proven wrong...I'll let you know!

Ashcrofts by far the most reasonable of prices. Little bro's 93 LSE complete reco transfer box (BW) including new spud shaft was just short of A$1900 landed about 12 months back.

    Great advice and service.

Just a followup. I have been quoted $2100 for a recon box from rovacraft - Ashcrofts Ozzie distributers and $720 for a new VC. Both good prices. even though my head says go the box my wallet says go the VC. Its Christmas after all.

    Bump.

Ive ordered the new VC ...but it won't be here until late Jan or even Feb.
As I have stated I have the front driver axles out so I'm driving a 4x2. so no prob's, except I want to go camping. The site is only accessable by dingy and (most likely) need 4x4 to get the tinny in the water.

Can anyone tell me if I were to replace the fronty drive shafts - will I do any damage if I keep driving around with a seized VC. My guess (correct me if I'm wrong) is that as long as you don't go hooning around on full lock too much (reducing the strain on the Cv's) you should be OK... or am I asking for trouble?

    Thanks in advance,
