    Intercooler Flushing

    Is this a big job?
How often do you do it?
    What happens if you don't?
Does it make a noticable difference?
    What chemicals/products do you use?

Recently done it here at work (we make truck CAC's), we used a cleaner specifically designed for cleaning the internals of intercoolers from the local radiator repair shop.
It did a ripper of a job.

Do not use caustics for cleaning.

Just make sure that all the solvent is out of the system before tightening everything up... If not, you might find it'll rev its nuts off!!!!

Tip... Leave the intercooler top hose disconnected from the intercooler and make sure it's well away while you start the engine. Then, slowly move the hose towards the intercooler so that you're starting to draw air through while making sure that the engine doesn't rev too high. Keep moving the hose closer to its proper position until you can finally connect without the engine reving out of control.

Did mine recently and it has made a bigggg difference (never done in 300,000km). On my Disco I had to unbolt the PS reservoir to get it out.

BTW I love the warning in the workshop manual - "ensure the intercooler element is completely dry before refitting, otherwise overspeeding of the engine may occur". Such a delicate way of saying it'll rev clean off the tacho and most likely destroy itself

I do mine every year in the Tdi - every other service.

Easy to do take it off as I start the service and wash out with Acetone and leave in the sun while I service the rest of the car. Just to make sure I put compressed air through it a couple of times before re-installing.

Do you get much gunk out at 12 month intervals?

Just not sure if this needs to be a yearly thing or something along the lines of a 60,000km interval?

dont get much residue, I just include it as part of my major services - also a good check on the oil from the turbo.

I recently upgraded my intercooler. I noticed that the old one had a fair amount of oil in it-ie lying it down on a slope after removal I could see that it collected into several drops worth (and thats just the visible bit looking inside) - and that the end of the i/c bottom hose was also oily. It is about 50000 (engine 150k) since I had cleaned it....does this sound like there is a problem, or is it to be expected?I have heard that others have had small amounts of oil in theirs but not sure how small is small.
