    Turbo boost

Guys, is it possible to increase the boost on a 300tdi by adjusting the threaded rod which is in between the actuator and wastegate? or is there some other way? I dont want to increase it much, just a couple of psi to see what the difference is.

    Cheers

There used to be a couple of ways, with the old Sonic Research turbo's.
A mechanical dash mounted adjuster increased or decreased blow off spring pressure, and boost accordingly.

On these new systems there must be some trick in programming the control chips.

Or just jamb it shut and hang on.

    What control chips

ahhh, best to increase the fuelling, the boost is reasonable already

Yes Darren - just adjust the waste gate to suit (threaded rod). Assuming you have fitted a boost guage to monitor it and perferably an exhuast gas temp guage also.

I'm running 15psi - but I think I will take it to 17. Unbeknown to me, I was running around with a 5mm hole in the wastegate actuator for 12mths (thanks to discovery automotive in Perth). This resulted in next to no boost at low and mid range revs, then about 25psi at higher revs because the wastegate wasnt opening. The head gasket slowly blew over those 12months. So I think the engine can take it. Power increase will be approaximately proportional to the percentage boost increase (i.e. not much)

In the quest for more torque (done the fuel pump tweek 100,000km ago), I'm thinking of lowering the compression ratio, increasing the boost even further and retarding the timing a bit. I'm seeking more torque at around 3000rpm.

    cheers,
    Taz

Wot? The "ever so much cleverer than we oldies" kids, haven't computerized the turbo control yet?
Well that's just not good enough.

Barely 1 atmosphere of boost, is plenty? No. Surely not.

Be a bit cautious, I don't know about newer cars, but, the new Mack's computer, will shut the engine down because of over-boosting.
Over 14.7 PSI boost will put the computer into shutdown, my mate runs 14.5 on his Superliner with Cummins 600 HP. He leaves Adelaide at almost 70 ton, and drives up through the Heysen Tunnels at 95 KPH on cruise control.
    He loves it.

Me? I'm a supercharger fan, not real fond of turbo's.

Thanks taz, yeah i have a boost gauge installed and it is currently reading about 14-15 psi max, I just want to bump it up to about 17 to see what the difference is. Im getting a egt gauge in 2 weeks, then I can start playing with the fuel pump etc.

    Cheers

Yep. You can supercharge any engine. A turbocharger is only a supercharger driven by an exhaust gas turbine. They are more efficient because they do not take some of the performance boost they give to drive themselves. A supercharger may use up to, ooh, 2 or 3 percent of power made to drive itself from the crank. Big deal.

Even your humble old Victa lawnmower can be supercharged.

Why you might want to, beats me, but you can.

That distinctive growl of GM Diesels, comes from the supercharged, V type block, 2 stroke engine that they are.
Like the pair of 8V71's in my engine room on a small passenger liner I was engineer on.
(Very nice dining room 2 decks above as well.
Complete with dance floor, skylight, and Beale upright piano.)

Supercharging, nice constant positive power, with no damnable "turbo lag".

My 200tdi suffers with alot of lag and its worse when the A/C is on, once its up too 1500+ revs its takes off but full boost is at about 2500 rpm (13psi)

Can this be casued by the pump or hoses???

Adam - where are you measuring? 13psi sounds like at the manifold where as my figures are from the boost compensator line which is just after the turbo. Mind you I think the 200Tdi's ran lower boost.

Re peak boost - I can get around 13psi at about 2000rpm and full boost (15psi) at around 2500. At 1500rpm I'm getting around 5-10psi. So maybe yours is OK. Although original specs for these motors say peak torque at 1800rpm. Lies I say!

Always worth checking the hoses for softness thou.

Dont worry thou - you get used to the lack of power after a while
