    Earthing Pints on a Defender

    Hi,

I suspect I'm having trouble with earthing points on my Defender. I've seen a few other people on the forum recently with seemingly similar woes.

Where are the main earthing points on a Defender (for engine / lighting / instrumentation etc)?

I know the battery terminal ones are earthed to the passenger side chassy rail underneeth the battery compartment.

I can also find an earthing point on the engine bay side of the firewall, where a lot of instrumentation seems to be going to. Is this the only point or are there others?

Anyone know where I can get schematics of the Defender electrics?

Oh, and totally off the topic, what's the best place to put spotlight relays?

I'm thinking on top of the firewall on the engine bay side. Any other suggestions?... on second thought, I'll start a new thread for relay location.

    Cheers

    Bojan

I am fitting one of Divesafes headlight/driving light upgrades, and intend putting the relays on the drivers side mudguard under the dummy air intake.

Can't help with any of the other questions.

    Hey Numpty,

I have just installed a Traxide Defender Combo unit the other week - put the relays just behind the passenger light on the inner guard.

I was going to do the same as you have suggested with the relays under the dummy intake on the drivers side but the cable run from the battery would be rather long and therefore defeat the object of the upgrade IMHO.

    Earthing Pints on a Defender

Ah, now that'd be where you have the problem.

There are only three points where you can earth a pint in a Defender.

Passenger seat if the vehicle is in motion.

Driver's seat if the vehicle is stationary.

In the back if you're parked.

As long as you follow these rules everything should run fine.

Sorry to interrupt the tech forum.

    Cheers

That's why instead of running the cable from the battery, I intend running it from the starter motor which is only a short run.
