can you post a picture of the tops of the pads in the caliper....?
they should have some type of anti rattle spring fitted to prevent them from rattling.....
check the other side and see if they are the same or if anything is missing......
Hi Everyone,
I have had a very annoying rattle issuing from under the Disco for the past 6+ months. It sounds tinny so I thought it may have been an exhaust heat shield. After two services and asking them to trouble shoot, best answer I got was the internals of the exhaust are deteriorating.
Investigation today - RHR ? dust plate behind brake disc was rattling. Identified fatigue cracks at two bolt points. Removed. But still the rattle.
LHR I found that the brake pad moves within the caliper a few mm each way and knocks on the caliper. Could it be this as the rattle stops when I brake.
After all that, my question is, Should the brake pad move forwards and backwards within the caliper? I checked the RHR which didn't move.
Any other hints at what may be causing the rattle?
Thanks in advance.

I'll have a chance Tuesday I think to do this...will take a pic then and compare.
Do I need to release the caliper to check for the spring or should it be visable from the top of the caliper? There appears to be 'a' spring there.

The brake pads will have some movement in them. They are designed to "float" within the calipers though will remain captive by the encapsulating design of the caliper. I wouldn't sweat about it if it's only minimal.
Rattling, the TD5 downpipes sometimes do this, moreso when cold and had mine changed under warranty. Some also have the bolt on the diff contact the rear section of the exhaust. The rotor backing plates cracking off happened to mine also. I just got rid of them and the brakes still seem to work.![]()

you should be able to se it without even taking the wheels off.......
if the pads have a hole in them that the pin passes through......then there should be a spring fitted over the pin......between the pads.......
if the pads are the type with a split pin holding them in......then they should have a type of spring clip wedged between
the split pin and the pads......
ok...just had a look at the workshop manual.......
the d2 has a different caliper all together......the springs are built onto the top of each pad......
make sure they are sitting correctly against the caliper and not angled and sticking through the hole......
Check the washers on the back of the front radius arms/hockey sticks.
Betcha.

The D2 runs a different radius arm setup to the D1/RRC/Def. The bolt goes through sideways acting like a hinge. Then again, the bolt could still be loose as you say.
