Engine Swap Discovery 1
G'day
I have a 95 V8i Disco that has recently decided to blow a head gasket or crack a head (I haven't had it looked at as yet as local Landy expert very busy). I have only had this beast for three years the first of, which was great. However now that it has done approx 180,000 km it has been very temperamental. I would like to keep the old girl as it looks good in Niagra (gunmetal grey) but I'm not sure about spending money on the 3.9 currently fitted.
I have noticed on the web a place named Marks 4wd Adaptors who seem to specialise in making adaptor kits to fit Holden and Chev V8s, Chev and Buick V6s. Whilst I'm sure these engines are all good I am a die hard Ford fan and as such was wondering if anyone had knowledge of fitting a Ford Windsor or a OHC inline 6 into a Disco. At a guess I would assume the inline 6 is to long to fit in the engine bay which would be a pity as I already have a low mileage one sitting in my garage.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

Mate the rover V8 is generally an excellent motor that is sometimes let down by the ignition (easily fixed for a 95 using Bosch dizzy) - anyway they usually put up huge ks, but the trick, apart from regular servicing (ie basic oil and filter changes) is keeping the proper coolant in the radiator and not mixing the wrong coolant in....its alloy so this is important.
In my opinion the light front end (lets face it the standard tyre pressures are less in the front than in the back!) is what makes the rover so good both in handling on road and off road compared to the jap stuff. You go an put another 250/300kg over the front axle and thats gone.
If it were me, and I have a 95 D1 with 245,000 on the clock and excellent compression and power I would get it stroked out and reconditioned. I spoke to an excellent re-conditioning shop 2 years back and they were talking 3-4000 for the reco and full balance with some porting and polishing of the heads, so adding the stroker to that and you would get a magic motor with a monster increase in torque whilst keeping the weight to standard for a good cost. In my experience the Mark's kits are very good (my brother is an agent for them) but they are not cheap.
Cheers

if you going to spend 3 to 4k on a rebuild of 3 to 4k for a conversion you should know that you can pick up a brand new 4.6ltr bottom end for that sort of money.
Thats what i did with my 93rrc and imho all rangies and discoveries should be fitted with these from factory, it transforms the vehicle

Thanks guys
All food for thought. I think I have bought this problem on myself as I was not aware that my Disco was not fitted with a low water indicator until recently so I have most likey been running the old girl without enough coolant in her. I kept the overflow container filled but I doubt now if that was enough. Add to that I'm in Townsville the poor old thing must have been suffering for a while.
I will investigate the advise offered as I have the choice of fixing the Disco or keeping our recently inherited 98 RAV4 instead. I know which I would prefer, lol.
Thanks again.

There's your answer.
Sell the Rav4 and and use the funds for a 4.6 V8
If I remember correctly the other DiscoStu converted his Disco1 to a 4.6 after his 3.9 died. So you must continue the tradition.

Maybe I should consider converting it to a TDI or TD5 as I'm guessing this new government will be doing its best to get the gas guzzling V8s or the roads since it is stupid enough to believe in the green hoax effect ..
