Do you load up the park (pin) Bulm when you stop and then put the park brake on (or maybe not using the park brake) then it will clunk when you try to release it.
A good way to check for if it is driveline back lash is to start the engine and with you foot on the brake, release the park brake and select drive and then once loaded up select reverse.
This will take up any back lash and you can listen to see if it is the same clunk.
Then to check the suspention bushes accelerate and then back off and see if that is the noise.
Good luck.

No I tried Dans suggestion and Hey Presto! no clunk. What I failed to tell you is that I have a fairly slopped drive..so when I put it into park I am, as has been suggested, putting a load on the park pin where as I should be taking up the load with the park brake ( which holds the car just fine BTW).
So Its a matter of changing a long formed habit - or else learn to live with a clunk.
