I just "fitted" a crane optical conversion. Not a nice job. "mutli-fit" really means a bad fit on all. Don't go there If any one is thinking of it. The timing is nasty to get back.

I have a crane DMS - but she now sounds tappety on after releasing the accelorater after a rev, even though it runs better....I checked the tappets warm, got them to the required distance but..

when she's running correctly i will get back on track in organising the barbie. This was unanticipated.

Sorry but cant tell you if you have a ballast resistor or not but I fitted one of these crane systems to my RRC and wasn't sure if I needed a resistor or not so I just put one in anyway, better to be safe than sorry.
I can honestly say it improves things no end, runs like a dream. Best thing I have done, other than getting the carbs overhauled. I would never go back to points.

Why the **** would you do that, it needs a ballast resistor if its a 9.6V coil and doesn't for a 12V coil, putting a ballast resistor in with a 12V coil is stoopid and the only thing it achieves is reduced spark

I know that it used to be put in by the form of "resistance" wire in the ignition loop in older vehicles,
This was my main question. Did they do this on the series vehicles?

I'll double check anyway. Crane "strongly recomend" the bypassing of the ballast btw.
But they also say ALL points vehicles have Ballast Resistors..

It is to keep the spark strong when the starter motor is engaged i beleive?
I'm still a little unsure to how that works with less current.Is it dropped out of the loop when the ignition start is engaged?

all points vehicles don't have ballast resistors, only where the ignition system needs less than the 12v that the system produces. I needed one for my holden conversion because it was a 6v coil and dizzy, trouble was it always had 12v running through it and it killed them both. I've got an electronic dizzy and coil from a blue motor now which runs on 12v, so I just wired it straight in!

I wasn't sure if it would affect the CraneCams ignition unit or the coil so I asked on here and got several differing responses so rather than risk having to buy a new $$$ unit I put on the ballast resistor.

My RRC starts first time everytime, and runs like, to quote Lord BlackAdder
"The privy door when the plagues in town"

So I'm a happy bunny, I wouldn't say a stupid one.

The Series Landrover didn't have a resistor in the system, BUT check the base of the Coil, if it has stamped on it Use with a Resistor it is a 9.6 v jobbie and wrong, weak spark, if unstamped it will be 12v, unless the Elect Ign. instructions say to fit a Resistor don't, the better electronic unit is the Lumenition from UK for the 4cylinder Landy, www.lumenition.com it is a simple distributor base plate change-over, there is an article in the LRMonthly Mag (LRM Nov07)
