    TD5 fuel pump issues

Have just experienced an interesting thing.
    1. Had long range tank installed 14 months ago.
    2. Had no problems, (other than a fuel hose pop off 2 months ago) until the other day.
    3. Fuel pump started screaming like a banshee, but car still running ok.
    4. Thought it was on its way out despite only 30000km on it.
    5. Got new pump fitted, in doing so they found old pump had 2 hoses back to front from the colour coding that is standard, yet pump still worked.??????
    6. Changed hoses around to what they are supposed to be and car no go. ????? Change back to way they were and car go, but new fuel pump also very noisy.
    7. 100km later car cuts out. No start. New pump got progressively noisyer as I went along until it to was screaming. Put old pump back in and still no start. Can hear pump screaming!!!!!!!!!
    8. To dealer and hoses changed around, car now go, fuel pump nice and quiet, like it used to be.

    WHY IS THIS SO??????????

the pump has a high pressure and a low pressure side. theres 4 hoses 2 outs and 2 in

if you cross up the low pressure and the high pressure outlets you wind up having the high pressure pump feeding the low pressure pump that then feeds the engine. The screaming is more than likely the relief setup inside the pump going nuts due to the amount of fuel it has to handle.

if you got air into the system it wont start, If you dont do the fuel bleed procedure correctly it takes a while to get it to start but it will start if you are persistant enough.

in theory the pump is capable or working off of the high pressure pump alone but it will suck air as the fuel level lowers, at least thats my guess from the quick look Ive had at the second hand pump that Ive gotten my hands on to work out what we can use as a replacement. (side note for those who remember that thread, the pump I thought we could use we cant, its physically to big and the outlets are wrong)

Id be betting that at the dealers all they've done is hooked it up correctly and bled the system unless youve added more fuel in which case it may just be working on the HP side alone and the pump has been quietened by the extra fuel...

Mine has always made a squeal, thought it was normal, never had an issue but do get allot of comments on if there is something wrong with my car. changing the filter makes no difference, one mate reckons he still wants to have kids so wont walk down the back of my car

when I say noise, I mean screaming like a banshee ALL THE TIME. Not just an initial peep when you first turn the ignition on. Blkknight, I think you're on the money as to how they fixed it, very simple. Apparently each hose and the fitting is colour coded (in the pump and at the fitting points) so I have no idea how the people who installed the pump stuffed it up???

Here's and interesting thing I picked up for the benefit of all. If you are looking to replace your pump (defender) dont buy a defender pump!!! Buy a Disco pump. Why.?? I am told they are the same pump, just a different sender arm which you will already have and can swap to the new pump anyway. The reason being is the Disco pump is around $600-700 while the defender pump is $1200 plus (I've priced them at $1500!!!!!!).
    cheers

yep and I might have a cheaper option again having given a pump the once over, the pump I thought I might be able to get wont physically fit but there might be some others that can be retrofitted.

I have to wait for the rice head to get back but If my WAG is right there is a $200 pump that will fit the bill nicely
