D1 automatic - torque converter lock

    Hi all,

My 97 SE7 V8i locks the torque converter at just on 80kph.
It stays on unless the speed drops below 80 or it kicks back to 3rd.

    Is this normal?

The auto in the foulcan drops the diff lock when you plant the foot down fairly hard, prior to "kick down".

I assumed the Land Rover would be the same??

    Cheers

My TD5 locks the torque converter at 80kph but wont disengage (even under 80kph) unless I lift my foot from the accelerator or hoof into it for a kickdown to 3rd.

This may be a dumb question... But in my defence I don't drive an auto..

How do you know if the torque converter is locked up?

It "drives" the same as a manual,, speed = revs X gears

when the box is unlocked,, its over-revving for the same speed

    Nathan,

When the vehicle gets to a little over 80, the rev counter automatically drops 200 to 300 rpm as the torque converter locks, just like changing into another gear. What it does is a clutch plate locks the converter into direct drive, no slippage.

    2000rpm at 80kph becomes 2000rpm at 90 kph.

    Cheers

I'd say yours is operating properly, mine on the other hand doesn't seem right, I think the clutches have had it.
