age, heat, repeated water exposure combined with braking hard while wet, oil on the shoe.
the lining expands differently to the metal of the shoe and eventully it will (on cheaper shoes) make the bonding break.
Any one know why the bonded linings on the brake shoes come off, that is come unstuck. I've owned this series one for 45 years (it was five years old when I bought it) and never had this happen before.

Thanks Dave, Bit of background. I left the L/R overseas when I returned to Aussie, used and abused by many carers. I had been using this type of lining for years on several vehicles. Yes it was a mess when I got it back. Both front linings were off. Put new ones on. Then not much use for about ten years (paddock basher) but now have got club plates, Still not much use, and have just rebuilt the complete front end to find the linings I put on here are starting to lift again. Yes could have had brake fluid on them but not much.

G'day Ian Harvie
I would agree with the age, and brake fluid bit, but also that the quality of the bonding material could be sussif possible change your source of exchange shoes, as they might be using the cheapest grade of glue, the whole idea is that the vehicle will be beyond it's use-by date and wrecked before the linings are worn out

Thanks guys, just seems a bit odd in these days of hi tech stuff that the glues aren't better. I'll just put new ones on. (Or go back to rivited)
Ian (The brake pads on my plane are rivited)
I was told several years ago that there are now only one or two places in Australia that bond brake linings (presumably because of liability fears) but there are probably a large number of bonded "exchange" shoes in stock (particularly for rarer vehicles like old Landrovers) with various suppliers that were done by defunct companies that are defunct for good reason!

John, Brake Corporation of Australia in Minto South of Sydney may be one of them. Haven't had them supply for a Land Rover, but I have a tractor that has weird brake pads on inboard discs, they made up and bonded onto the old backing, and did it as per my drawing. They were very helpfull. Later I needed clutch plates for the same tractor and they also supplied those. I think the prices were pretty reasonable.
