    Hi Steve,
After removing the nut etc,Try a horizontal hit on the housing where the pin goes through with a BIG hammer, not some little girly one. This will release the pin from the taper effectively. Remember, 1 hit with a big hammer is better than 20 hits with a little one.

As for the boots, Repco sell them in packs of 2, part number TE3 if I remember...

if it doesnt come with the first couple of MAN sized hits (use a hammer the size of a small european counrty) using a jack on the threaded section (put the nut on till its level with the threads) and put just a bit of push on it then hit it like you hate it. and when I say hate it I mean hate it as in the special kind of hate you reserve for child molesters and people who talk on mobile phones in the movies.

if it doesnt come then , check to make sure some bugger hasnt run a bead of weld on it.

You can pick up a ball joint puller pretty cheaply from somewhere like SuperCheap Auto. The Repco number for the boots is TE something but TE3 doesn't sound quite right. Someone must know...

I bought some tie rod boots from 4 wheel drives in Box Hill, Vic for $3.00 each a few weeks ago

Dont bother with super cheap mechanical spliters as they basically just rip them selves apart, the tapered fork type splitters from S/C work fine though.

I also normally use the big hammer trick and as long as they are not welded in or badly rusted in they split pretty easilly.

I have resorted to Daves meathod a couple of times but the one thing you need to watch is that you dont stuff the thread.

The splitters aren't intended to pop it out alone. I use it to preload the tierod in exactly the same way that Dave mentioned using a jack. Then hit it with a hammer and it pops right out.

The forks will probably rip the boots apart, so that's only a good option if replacement is part of your plan.

I've had good results with two hammers, one from either side (like bricking a camel )

    FWIW
    How long they been cracked?
    Were they greasable items?

If 'a while' or 'no' I'd opt for replacement units, the dirt & moisture will be in them and they'll die soon enough.
