    Leaking front diff

Just noticed the front diff of my Defender has sprung a leak...nothing too dramatic, and looks to be coming form the seal between casing and diff housing at the rear.

A quick look at Rave shows the axles and prop shaft needing to be removed to get the diff out, but the drawing doesn't show the gasket. Anyone know if it's one piece, and therefore will need everything to be dismantled, or is there an easier way?

Try nipping up the bolts holding the diff centre in, if they are loose this may solve the problem, otherwise it will mean dropping the centre out and applying liberal amounts of Silastic Gasket, Regards Frank.

Good point, thanks. One for when I'm sober though.

    Hi jik,
At this moment does this mean that YOU are the weakest point?

If so, get out onto the driveway, fast.

They're a one piece gasket, if the nuts (not bolts) aren't loose, then dropping the 7 bolts holding each swivel housing and withdrawing the axles till the brake lines have no slack, will allow you to take out the centre and replace the gasket, PLEASE reuse a gasket on the centre as not using a gasket creates misalignment of the axles to the side gears

Don't concern yourself with a gasket for the face the swivels bolt to, as this wont cause any misalignment it will jut push the axle 20thou or so further in, not causing a drama, goo here will suffice
