No.
The space behind the lower part of the fascia is restricted by the main dash-shelf which carries through behind it. Your best bet is a slide-out screen type unit.
Has anyone removed the stereo from their Defender (2002 or later I think)?
Is the space once the surround is removed large enough for a double-din stereo?
I'm thinking of one of these touch-screen dvd/gps jobbies.

Thanks, and damn, the double one's are so cheap compared to the slide-out ones!
Not to worry.
Cheers.

You may be able to butcher the shelf a bit. The fascia panel is also very flimsy so it pays to try and fit one of those security struts (the ones they usually supply with holes in it) behind to support the rear of the unit.
The front double-din looking face plate is just held in by a couple of spring clips from memory. Not that secure at all.
Do you have any tips as to how to remove the existing stereo? the manual shows 2 long "probes" one pushed in each side, any idea of a substitute?
Thanks for your advice too!
Hi Fraser130,
Please! Please! Please! show your location. There is likely to be a member nearby who could help.
All stereos should come with two flat bits of metal about 80-90mm long which are inserted either side of the faceplate to release the unit from its cradle. Whilst you probably won't have the original ones for the Land Rover head unit, any aftermarket stereo should come with a pair.
You just push them in, either side of the unit until they reach a stop, then push just a little further and they should force the cradle clips out to release the unit and it slides out.
You can't really do this with two screwdrivers (if that's what you were thinking) as the metal bits need to be flat.
You can cut the lower dash that stops a double DIN fitting. When fitting the mud dash to earlier Defenders this section is cut away to fit so that double din units can be fitted or two radios or combinations of 2 single din units. You should be able to do similar with the later model Defenders that come out with a similar dash console or you may wish to use one of these. But be warned it will take some butchering. Thanks guys for your advice.
I got a single din one with a motorised screen in the end, pretty happy with it, also bought a bloody big amp for the rear panel behind the rear seats.
Replaced the stock speakers with some 4" JBL's which sound much better but lack any bass whatsoever (I knew this would be the case as they are only tiny) The amp is installed and runs 4 channels, so all I need noe is some 6 x 9's in boxes to be strapped to the rear floor with some plugs (xlr probably) and sockets on the seat box, then I might look at a sub!
When I get the 6 x 9's i'll set the high pass filter to filter out the bass to the fronts, and they can be like mid/high range and full range in the rear doing most of the work.
I do like my music distortion free!
Just a small point, the factory radio/cassette had 2 round holes in the front sides, this took a 2.5mm allen key and when these were undone perhaps 10 turns, the unit just slid out.
