    Gday all

A friend of mine living in swansea tas has a 2000 mod ser2 td5 disco with a buggered tranny he has had a local stealer look at it and they say reco or replace and the figures he was given were crazy is there anyone who can help as id rather see him get it done proper by someone in the know not just a stealer who wants to rip the poor bugger off as hes new to tassie and has no net access so corraspondance is through me and it would be great to see someone from here do the job or point him in the right direction

    Thanks in advance guys

    Hi yer chris

mate when we went through the same thing with the boys ZF it would have been cheeper to get a re-co box rathar than re-build I could have got a re co box 12 months warrenty for 1500k parts and labour (mates rates )to rebuild close to 3k.. dont know what the go is in Tas though maby give Justin a pm see if he can assist

thanks tony i thought id see if someone from down that way could offer advice or could supply a recoed job as the mate has been quoted well over 3 k for one from a stealer tho maby if the right person had a look at the box it may be saveable as the dealer may just be bull 5hiting him to screw him for a reco price and it may only need a minor job as its only 7 year old surely it could be fixable

As long as the clutches gear train and sprag are in ok condition (they normally have around a 300,000km+ life span) then most other parts are in the valve body which should be able to be repaired by someone in the know but they are an extremely tempremental box to set up properly and is much better to be set up during a rebuild and set on a dyno before fitting or else it could take a long time to get it right which could cause more damage to the box than it has now.

The other issue being a D2 is the electronics can be the cause of problems so this should be checked before anything with the box is even attempted.

We would need to know what it is or isnt doing to know if it is something that may or may not be able to be fixed without a rebuild but then without seeing it it is really hard to diagnose on description alone.

Pretty much everyone I have spoken to about ZF trans send them to A&B trans in Dandenong Vic,(I dont have the number ) a mate of mine used to that work there and they specialise in all the euro stuff and dyno everything before refitting as well as they do a complete rebuild as well as mods to stop future failures but it is generally over the $3k mark last time I had a quote.

I believe JustinC has a rebuilder over the other side of town that does similar to or the same as A&B so maybe get in touch with them as well.

    Good luck

The Rebuilder I send mine to is Manuel Automatics, 353 Settlement rd Thomastown. 94664499.

They have done a number of them for me now and very helpful too.

$3000 plus installation etc isn't far off the mark actually.

There is a small chance of a used trans available, PM or ring me on 0408 995 635

    Thumbs up

I've used A&B Automotive in Dandenong South, VIC and they are excellent.

The owner is also a member of the Range Rover Club of Victoria and his company supplies rebuilt auto transmissions for the Land Rover dealerships, as well as Audi and Subaru.

Their workshop is 100% clean and I would recommend them to anyone.

No affiliation, just a happy customer!

I went for a Job with them when they were in Murrimbeena but my mate got it instead of me but I got another job the next day so I wasnt upset but I was highly impressed with how well they did things there then and I hear they are in a purpose built factory now that has made it even better again.

This is a Good idea Lokka, freight isn't all that much from Sydney, about $100 or so for a skid pallet.

    Go for it!
