    A couple Fender TD5 questions

Interested in anyones views/knowledge on the following:

On open road cruizing the Fender feels it needs another gear. Has anyone investigated fitting an an overdrive, assuming it could be done on the later transfer boxes? As I understand it, the Fairley Overdrive bolted on the PTO pad on the back of the Series transfer box. and

Does anyone know a reason why a TD5 can't be converted to diesel - gas?
Just I have only seen mention of TDI's being converted.

    Thanks

You could also look at putting in some Disco transfer gears instead of the overdrive.

Do a search for Ashcrofts in the UK as I remember they had some info on doing this.

There are also a few previous postings on this topic, so you could try searching here too.

Ratio Upgrade £225 If your TD5 90/110 or Tdi revs excessively on the motorway we are able to raise your transfer case gearing by 15%, by replacing the gearing in the exising 1.410 ratio transfer box with new 1.222 gears, as used in the Disco. This will not only reduce your revs but also reduce noise. This change will not effect Low Range and will leave your Speedo reading true. .
Gear Set only £225 new outright

GKN do an overdrive which is activated by a switch on the top of the gear lever. Can't find a good link to them, but it was reviewed in an edition of Overlander magazine some years back.

Ashcroft kit works a treat, although in hindsight, it would've been cheaper find a good 2nd hand LT230 from a S2 Disco, selling the Def Tcase and fitting that...

Increased the fuel economy about 0.5-1L/100 too

As for the gas td5, I think someone tried it a while back, only to have the engine destroy itself about 200kms later... Don't think anyone has been game to try it since...

why would you gas it? i thought it gave power not economy? as you cant run pure gas it has to be mixed? (im probably wrong tho arent i? ) some of the guys have been running 180kw + through the td5 with a few tweaks... intercooler... ecu reprogram.. etc etc etc oh and a gearbox every 20000k's

    Thanks

Exactly why I'm still a tad nervous at the idea of re-chiping

if you get it done (mines at 140kw) mildly then there are no issues just better drive, better towing, and better economy, but running it at 180kw+ and monster torque figures then you expect something to give.. especially in a driveline that isnt designed for that much power! as has been stated on here many a time, the mild tune is how it should have been sold!

    thanks

The System runs at approx 20% gas 80% diesel.
I would be doing the mod because the State and Federal Govs pay for most of the conversion costs, its like adding a long range tank and gas is cheaper so will lower the running costs a little.
I wasn't after a power increase though the Fender will be tested next week when I tow a loaded camper trailer ( approx 1900 kg) so I may want a power tweek in the future.

Hi, Graz, my TD5 130 runs well at 100kph although I tend to cruise around 90 since I am pushing a lot of air. I don't have my rev. counter installed as yet so I don't know the revs at that speed. Someone on here may have the revs/km info. By installing an overdrive you may find the engine running below peak efficiency.I would stay away from transfer case ratio changes as, in my opinion, first gear is too high already. I seem to need some clutch slip on uphill starts, more if I am towing. With regard to the diesel-gas bit, more TDI's are mentioned because the TD5 pulls better anyway and is less in need of the modification. A larger Intercooler seems to be a good thing and doesn't add to the complexity.I would like more torque at low speed but the rest of the range is fine.Cheers, 130man.
