03 Td5 Disco fuel eco is bad

OK, my disco is sucking more fuel then what it should be. It all seems to be from when a few things were done - see below.

Firstly, this tank, it has sucked three quarters of the tank and only driven 550ks. I would usually get between 450 and 550 ks on half a tank.

About 1 month ago I change the MAF as I was having surge issues at 3200rpm. It was replaced with an MAF from roverparts so I do not know if this is an OEM part.....my guess is that it is not. There was also an intercooler pipe split so the pipe was replaced. At the same time, I also gave it a service. New oil and filters all round including fuel and oil.

I use only BP Diesel only and fill up from the same station.

So, I would think it cound only be -

    1. MAF is faulty
    2. The Delvac 1 just doesn't like my motor

    thoughts?

    Cheers

Hmmm, mine used to get 550km to the tank when it had a standard tank, and I fill up with a long range tank at about 1000km. My Disco does have a lot of lard in it also. I assume yours is a manual. I'm not sure how you're getting that type of economy living on the North Shore.

Anyway, it wouldn't surprise me if it is the MAF or related to the MAF. I understand if this isn't working it causes the engine to run rich and hotter. The other place to check is the MAF fuse, I've blown these before and they do make a notable difference to the economy also.

Thanks for the prompt reply Slunnie....

We do a lot of driving on the M2....rarely driven in stop start scenarios.

I will check the MAF fuse.....thanks

    BTW its an Aut0...

    Ah, thats how it's done!

Hopefully it's something as simple as the fuse. Interesting Graeme was saying the other day that he cleans his MAF with electronics cleaner inside and out.

Another thing which may be of interest, is that I liked BP fuel when I ran petrols many tears ago as they assure it is clean and I was picking up bad fuels from other outlets like Caltex, Ampol and Shell. In the diesel though I'm certain that I get better range from shell fuel for some reason, and have never picked up a bad batch that I'm aware of.

    TD5 Fuel economy Bad

    Hi Caine,
Take the MAF out and write down the brand and part number. Landrover use Siemens 5WK9607 and give it a Rover part number MHK100620

I would also check the EGR valve is not stuck partly open as this will kill your fuel economy.

Also with the engine turned off check the turbo wastegate adjustment has the gate fully closed. If someone has backed it off to rectify your surge problem you will have lower boost from the turbo resulting in putting your foot down more to get any where also giving poorer economy.

Also as Slunnie said check Fuse 2, 15 amp located in the under bonnet fuse box as it is in the earth line for the MAF, EGR and Wastegate.

Ugly little sucker if it is blown.

OK I checked the fuse, and all others whilst I was there, and all looks OK.

I will check the part number now, thanks Brad....Do you think it matters if it is OEM? I still have my old one so if it is not an OEM part I will fit the old and confirm it is indeed the MAF..

If it has that Siemens Part number on it then it is a MHK600120.

Check the EGR is not stuck open and wastegate modulator adjustment.

Check connectivity of the plug on the MAF.

Check the wiring loom from the MAF where it goes over the air-cond compressor that the loom tube has not fallen to bits and the wires are sitting on the compressor.

Ok the MAF I bought from roverparts is not OEM. So I have fitted the original back on after cleaning it with carby cleaner.....it looked fine though. The sensors, or whatever they are, were already extremely clean, or so it appeared. None the less, I sprayed it with some cleaner. I will take it around the block shortly. It may not surge any more....pretty ticked off that they sold me a non oem. They made a point of mentioning that another part I purchased from them was NOT OEM so I dont know why they didn't tell me about the MAF....anyway, I will sort it out after new year. They did sound like resonable people.

I will check the EGR and wastegate.......have to look up the EGR on the RAVE cd first

Do you think I should take off the EGR and give it a clean as I understand these can get quite dirty?? Anything I should look out for. According to the RAVE cd it looks quite easy.
