Now I am ticked...
I was inspecting the EGR valve and the intercooler hose that plugs in to it. Now this is a brand new part and only 5 or so weeks old and it is split. Completely split. It does not look as if it was venting in to the atmosphere at this stage but I can feel that the thin layer left is not far from splitting through. 2 or 3 laters are just peeling off.
AND...it did not surge. Not once.
Serenity now....serenity now.....count to 10....
Brad, I remember you recommending silicon hoses......well, leason learnt. By the way where do I get them from again??

Just read the policy on the roverparts site....and yep I am covered.
PLEASE READ THESE CONDITIONS OF SALE & WARRANTY CAREFULLY
Roverparts plus offer a 3 month warranty on used parts and 6 month warranty on new parts. These warranty terms are not transferable, original invoice is required for proof of purchase. Used parts sold by Roverparts plus should be clean, tested to be in good working condition, and where applicable, engraved or marked "RPPTRS". Purchasea should be accompanied with a receipt or invoice, this will validate the warranty.

Just went for a longer drive and it is not as smooth....so the new MAF is doing something to resolve that (the old OEM one is currently fitted).

Caine,
I was reading a post and someone reccomended a person by the name of Dwayne in Brisbane on 0732846688 who does quality silicon hoses at a reasonable price.
Also get rid of the EGR valve altogether as they are a usuless item that will cause you trouble eventually. You can get a kit to do it. If yours is a 2003, insert the blockoff plate before the exhaust gas cooler on the front of the motor, remove the EGR, block off the vacuum hoses and bolt the tube in place for the intercooler hose to attach to. Get a second block off plate off ebay england and bolt it on the other end of the cooler.
The TD5 will run a lot smoother off idle after removing it.
You cannot tell if the MAF is any good by looking at it. The wires on my old one crumbled when I gently touched them. Yep, it was open circuit when I metered it before I touched the wires. Looked ok though.
Sounds like you are on top of it. Have a good Christmas.

There is a place in Hornsby that sells silicone hoses at reasonable prices. If no one else knows the name, I will try to find my invoice.

Michael,
That would be great. I am 10 minutes away from Hornsby....Hope they're open on Sunday...
Brad, I am always a little dubious about removing items that Land Rover fit from factory....but I will look into it. Cheers.

Silicon hoses are commonly used on aircraft. Try an aircraft parts supplier. They are usually at airfields that have numbers of light aircraft. We used to go to Archerfield Airport in Brisbane for braided silicon hose to replace the factorys grossly overpriced hoses used on the swinging radiator in Leyland Crusaders. One third the price and better.

Thanks Brian....I could not get silicon in time so I purchased one from Land Rover. ALL of the issues are now resolved. I am back to getting over 400 ks from half a tank, the motor is smoother, accelerates better and has power through the rev range.
For all future searches of fuel issues on a Td5, check all intercooler piping and don't buy after market unless it's silicon.
