ok what have i done, 300tdi filter change

    Ok Guys,
Help required, I decided to do a filter change on the 300tdi yeasterday,

    Air , no issue
    Oil no issue
    Fuel, sedimenter, no issue
    Fuel filter, Issue.

Change yesterday, quick test drive all ok , actually a little quicker, last change 5k ago, no problems , go to start this morning, barley running, foot to the floor surgeing foot off near to stall.

I've change back to the old filter, same , bleed the bottom of the filter no difference,

    where to next

Lift Pump would be my guess...Same thing happened to me recently,i changed the fuel filter and fired it up and ran fine until it had used the fuel in the lines then pretty much nothing..

Same as yours it would start and run sort of.
Have you tried priming the system with the lift pump?

bleed screw for the filter is at the top of the housing, beside one of the banjo bolts.
It's 10mm. The bottom drains are simply that, drains, not bleeds.
Did you use the priming lever on the lift pump ?
I'm wondering if the lift pump has failed........

well i've gone over and checked everthing again, as i would for a new filter change, sedimenter was dripping a bit , as i was worried on breaking it tighting up to much, now tight no drips, replaced the filter again, primed using lift pump, did this first time , maybe not enough. She now runs and is driveable, still has a few fluctuations in ideling?, could this still be a lift pump issue? or still air in the system?

Assume the lift pump is a easy change out just the two bolts and the fuel lines?

Now to find one on Xmas eve

you pump till you do get fuel out the bleed screw

that then means all the air is out of the filter assembly...

You most likely still have air in the system. The giveaway was the dripping sedimenter. I would take the sedimenter off again and check that the rubber seal/s haven't cocked over while refitting it. If you tighten it, you will crush the seal enough to stop a drip, but it will still draw air while running . And as far as the bleeding goes, bleed the filter housing with the engine off.

The Tdi will just about bleed itself, so I think you have air being drawn in somewhere.

As regards the lift pump, When you were pumping it to bleed the system, did the lever feel like it was pushing fuel through? They need to be on the BDC of the cam lobe in order for the stroke to be enough to pump fuel. And yes, they can sometimes fail when bleeding, but not all that common. I would remove the line from the lift pump to the filter housing (The banjo bolt at the filter is the best way) and run the engine briefly to check it's output. Obviously, no fuel = no lift pump operation.

    Best of luck.

Thanks To all , looks like the lift pump, Although drivable, was still surgeing, Tried Justinc process, remove line from lift pump to top of filter housing , and nothing on manual pump or engine running

So now to find a lift pump, and xmas eve or before the 28th........

    Thanks to all ,
