Just a curious question, from what I read low-beam works as long as you don't:

1). Switch to high beam
2). Use the flash function to flash to high beam

If that's the case, would you be able to simply use low beam until back in Melbourne ?

We can and did for 400km last night, It is much nicer and less stressfull on the eyes to fix the problem if possible.

its possible you have burnt out the high beam side of the switch....its a defanate if yoou have uped the high beam wattage ie put 100-130 lights in...and no realy......if not itmay be s simple as one of the high beams has gone and not compleating the circuit....

one presumes you have checked fuses and lamps.
if so, the fault lies in wiring or switch.
if you change the lamp wiring around to have high beam on when in low beam position, you could adjust the beam angle to dip it a bit and still have brighter lights, but if you leave high beam at its set level, i would expect a coke bottle to hit your car in the dark.

I have upgraded wiring harness for 130watt globes, protected by a dual circuit 30amp relay.

I had a VERY similar issue, when the LOW beam circuit failed in the dual circuit relay, the low and high beam still worked, though the low would turn itself on and off and odd times.

Replaced the relay, all works fine.

I was thinking maybe the standard relay in yours may be sticking, though rereading your description it seems more likely the column switch, due to the lack of the 'click' when engaging high beam.

If you can't find a local Land Rover dealer on your travels Monday, an expensive but quick fix may be to grab some driving/spot lights and mount them with a direct feed from the battery and then utilize the toggle switch inside the car to switch to your 'high beam' ..
hope this isn't too extravagant.

I just had a look at the circuit diagram for the D2 head lights.

I'd say that the dip/main switch has failed.

Hmm, just checked where Mittagong is .. your quite close to Berrima Diesel, whilst they are not auto electricians they know their way about a land rover and I am pretty sure would be able to help you monday morning, as they live at their workshop site and i think they may even run a bed and breakfast.

The headlight switch used by LR is a POS. Replace it with a new one, and wire in two double relays and heavy wiring from the relays to the lamps. This way the rubbish switch only has to handle the current that activates the relays.
