aaaaaarrrggggh. I'm really not getting my point across. Clearly it's me :o As I've said before, it's not just the engine, it's the whole vehicle that wears. Yes, I'd rather not do remote area touring in a vehicle with a million k's on it. It's not necessarily the engine it's the whole thing.

Yes, I'd rather be in a td5 powered vehicle with 20,000 than a 200tdi powered vehicle with 500,000 k on it. So shoot me!

Yes, I agree that there may be a small amount more risk involved in the electronics of a td5, however overall with all vehicle components being fairly new I think it's a better option for me with lower risk.

And to you luddites you better get used to engine electronics because the 200 and 300 tdi's are never going to be made again because they aren't going to pass emissions. For the record I'm sure they are great engines!

While I often hear about cars with high mileage driving around locally I'm yet to hear of very high milage vehicles being used for remote area touring. Post your stories up. Show me how wrong I am! Only examples where the vehicle is 500k+ please, and only examples where it is very remote, and off track. IE very bad dirt road or no road. And I don't want to hear of where it was used once, I want to hear examples where these vehicles were used for this type of stuff year after year. I'm sure there will be a few but not too many. Thanks :)

Do you research, read, be informed and then you will see.I promising to you, reading and searching for information is very rewarding. I am 62 and I am will learn until the time for me to go comes.
Read about other type of expeditions and other people experiences in remote places without mega dollars behind them.

Just become a member of expeditions forum, talk with expeditions organizers, have a look at the expeditions vehicles that continuously go to South Africa.
Some of the 109 are still being used for expeditions in SA and South America.
Regarding engines without electronics. look hoe many ocean going yachts have a diesel engine which depends in electronics,
I am a member of expedition organizations and forums and regarding adventures very much informed with the ocean going yacht community. In built yachts 1973 and the last ones 1973 to 2001 all for the exploration community.

urmmmm,,, does this mean I should stop planning my trip across the nullabore from the cape to albany in a diesel SWB SIIA?.....

does darwin to albany via perth and back in a 58 jeep CJ5 cut it for the requirements of an old vehicle doing a long trip?

how about a 72 r series mack doing the brisbane-townsville-highrange and back run?

Dave, It is appears to me that a very small percentage of the members are not informed of the present and pass expeditions done in Land Rover Tdi 300 and older and why they have choose these models.
Perhaps we cn start a new thread with some links to wreaking up the appetite for research and be well informed.
I just post a small quantity of links for the eager to learn about the subject.
If you think that is appropriate please move it to a different location in the forum or make a new thread.

Am I correct in presuming that no vehicles ever failed in the remote outback before the use of electronic control on diesels?

Considering how many folk have driven round the world treks in TD5's I cannot see what the issue is? They may break but very little stops them from getting you to home in limp mode.

JDNSW said a while back that for less than half of what a new Defender would cost he could just about replace/rebuild everything in his 110.

Look Ma, same axe, only changed the handle five times and the head seven times.

Come on...give me a break ! Any machine can break, the problem is being able to fix it in a remote place. Do you think that all the companies which are preparing vehicles for Africa and the people who are doing the adventures are dumb ?
It is not use to continue with the argument as long as the people who do not understand the issue are not prepared to put their neck where the mouth is.
Read and find out why they choose the tdi 300

They use similar fuel, that's about all they have in common.
I'll buy you a beer if your TD5 does 1million. Actually, I've seen you drive so yours probably will, but most won't.

You guys should read "The Asian Highway" by Jack Jackson a book written in the 70s with a good section on Land Rover expeditions he has some interesting thoughts all completely valid for the era.
Diesels were not considered reliable enough neither were Range Rovers strong enough.

If you are serious you don't go into the complete wilderness (if thats even possible today) in a vehicle that you cannot rebuild yourself.

I personally would be reluctant to travel in a modern Rover in outback Australia due to the shrinking dealer network. I think my nearest dealer is 800 km away but I don't think I would trust them so that leaves a specialist in Perth some 1600 km away this is why I drive an ancient Rover that I can rebuild myself if needed.

Its all fine where you have dealers or specialists but try to get someone at Giles to look at your TD5 the TDi 300 will be a bit more familiar to the local mechanic.
The bold statements made on the forum that modern electonics don't fail are wishful thinking at best, Murphy is still alive and when it does all turn to crap who fixes it.
