That's my concern is the alloy bits, even tho my V8 has plenty of course, but more so the TD5 head that cannot be saved once it's cooked it's u/s, at least most other alloy (petrol) engines can be decked/shaved & reco'd.
The Engine Monitoring System is actually bought from here from the Entertainer. Basically the same sort of gadget as yours at the end of the day, for the same reason, but has several other inputs.

I'm not taking sides but I am watching intently (other than pot stirring) as I'm mulling over the same descision.

According to Bosch, the TD5 coolant temp sensor manufacturer, the sensor works in air or liquids up to 130deg C (its working limit). It is known to have worked in a TD5 that had steam going everywhere, as the high-temp warning light was on and the gauge needle dropped to the bottom indicating the coolant temp was above 126.9 deg and out of operating range.

Ahh, thats interesting. Thanks for that Graeme, I didn't realise the TD5's one did that - also the out of range dropping the needle.

Wow! Good work on the links. I haven't got time to go through them all tonight. Can you tell me how many of them were done with cars that had had half a million punishing k's already on them?

I'm really not saying that there vehicles were unable to do this kind of work when they were new.. LOL.

Kermits done melbourne to sydney, sydney to townsville via the inland route

The landy I got off of dad (72 SIII) did most of australia and my last trip in it was perth-darwin.

one of the guys who posted out of a section on base is driving an FJ holden to perth via sydney and melbourne

Theres plenty of old vehicles out there that do long trips on a regular basis....

tell you what... convince some one to lend me ANY series rover that has a roadworthy and I'll drive it from here to any point on a map of australia that you choose with less than a weeks prep work...
    ----edit-----
best make that a diesel series since thats what we're debating diesels
    ----endedit---

    ----edit2-----
better yet make it a II or IIA just cause I like II's and IIa's and that will definately ensure its an old rover...

of course if someone wants to loan a SI...........

    ---endedit2----

then I'll do it in a tdi county/deefer

then an isuzu rover and finally big red...

IF i manage that you get to pay my wages for the time on the trip and 2x the fuel bill...

IF i dont manage it I pay the lot.

    and It'll be solo.

    ---edit3----
is that enough to convince poeple of it doesnt really matter how old or what type of gimmickry (or lack thereof) that makes it go rovers are all dependable vehicles if you look after them just a little....
    ---endedit3---
Dave... you are by all reports an excellent mechanic and I don't doubt you could do all of this.

Sounds like your old Jeep has done some work, but I'm still waiting for a flood of examples of land rover vehicles with half a million punishing k's on them being used regularly for serious remote use off track and off road.
