Very true McRover. Good suspension will make a lot of difference. I'm running lifted a total of 6 to 7" depending on tyres, but the suspension is tied right down with some really good shock settings. At 160km/h there is no instability or floating. Good suspension makes a world of difference.

Northern Territory. I'm not advising anybody to drive at those speeds. Actually, I just checked the GPS and it was 162 km/h.

Let's someone start a Disco v Defender thread - that'd be MUCH more fun !!!!!

On the TD5 Defender thing - has anyone worked out how to move (easily-ish) the ECU from under the seat to somewhere a little higher to stop it getting drowned in "oh that puddle / river / boghole doesn't look too deep !" mode.
    why bother?

get one of those air horn air pumps plumb it into the seat box so that it draws its air from the snorkle and pumps into the box and turn it on when you ford...

hey while your at it use the same air supply to pressureise yours diffs, starter, gearbox, tcase and batterybox...

the seat box is near enough airtight for it to work.... Ive tried it but yet to install it.

Looking into pages of Land Rover owners who done expeditions in Africa, Asia and South America, the Defenders are the preferred vehicle and the Tdi 300 is by far the favorite engine. When the owner explain why the Tdi, he said because simplicity and reliability. I think that is a very good reference why to select a engine which is not electronics dependable.
The selection of the Defender against the Disco is for the cargo space in the Def only.

    My 2 cents

I am only a young fella with limited experience, but l have had 3 Rovers in my time.

    1. 1999 Disco TD5 -
Issues: Oil in wiring loom harness, cooked head (never had to the same power since), ABS/HDC/TC lights combo, cracked the chassis at the front wheel, clutch. Sold the thing - massive losses!
    2. 1994 Def 200TDi -
    Issues: Clutch, wiring (indicators/hazard switch)
    3. 2006 Def TD5 -
Issues: all good so far at 50,000kms.

After the Disco l swore off the TD5 motor and said l would never have another one. Very expensive to fix! The 200 Defender was awesome. I punished that truck. Mud. Water. Rocks. Hills. Lots of touring. Towing. Never slowed down. Awesome economy.

Resale value - sold the Defender for more than l paid for it. Sold within 15 hours of being on Car Sales? I had no less that 40 calls on it. Many of whom stayed on the line to chat about the great the things are!!!

Having said that - being back in TD5 country is great. The power, refinement and tourque is awesome. I tow some heavy stuff - and the the TD5 loves it. We do a bit of off raod stuff in the Vic High Country - and have had no dramas at all - even when helping our Toyota "mates".

We service the minor ones ourselves and take them to a specialist (who seems to know more than the dealers anyway) for the major ones (stamp in the book is impt in LRs l have found!) Use a top bloke - Mornington Prestige. Mal 59 736670. Has all the computers to do upgrades, chips and the whole dice. Very knowledgable. Been around ages. Good for second hnd parts also (bars, lights, tyres, wheels).

    All the best.

why the pumps arent very noisy and if you mounted it up in the engine bay you probabley wouldnt make it out over the engine noise.

alternatively try one of those cheapy 12v centrifuge air pumps that kmat BCF and target tend to sell for inflating pool toys and air beds. You probabley wouldnt have to worry about regulating the air supply and some even have a suction duct on them that is the air intake making plumbing it up a very simple thing and they deliver buckets of air being able to inflate an air bed faster than my old supercheap aircompressor.
