    Viscous Fan -v8i

What size is that nut on the viscous fan for a 96 V8 Disco ? I was looking at an American forum and they reckon its a 32mm nut but its defiantly not because my 32mm spanner doesn't fit.

Also the workshop manual says its a reverse thread so righty tighty doesn't work, but someone else said that on the engines with the serpentine belt (mine) its a normal thread. Does anyone know for sure if its a normal or reverse thread ?

And finally is there a special tool you need to hold the water pump pulley in place so that you can get the nut off ? It mentions a special land rover tool in the manual but doesn't show any pictures so I know what I'm looking for.

    Thanks

    Duncan

36mm, reverse thread. The LR tool is just a normal fan hub spanner, which has a cranked head and is made out of 5mm plate steel. If the nut is frozen on the thread, a later ford viscous fan spanner might work on holding the pulley. The 32mm version is 90's Ford and 300Tdi

You can fashion a tool simple enough from a bit of flat steel by cutting an opening of the correct size. At a pinch You can use a flat shafted screw driver to jam in between the pulley bolt heads to stop it spinning as you crack the nut, just be careful you don't slip and break off the fan fins.
If you have a very thin adjustable wrench it'll work too.

32mm is correct for the L322 Td6 engine.

I can't remember the size for the classic or P38A - I use my big shifter.

Re direction, it undoes in the same direction that fan rotates be it LH or RH thread (V-belt or serpentine).

Leave the fan belt in place until after you've loosened the nut. I don't use a special tool to hold the coupling.
