    P38 Oil Leak

My P38 has had quite a oil leak for a while now, when reving the engine it runs down the oil filter and drips constantly.
First I removed the sump and replaced gasget just in case it was leaking (hoping) Nope still there ! After much tring to locate where it was coming from I (with the help of a small bendy light) traked down two welsh plugs above the oil filter the higher one slightly towards the front seems to be leaking

Can anyone tell me if I remove all the bits (that can be reoved around that location) if it can be replaced ??

Has anyone had to fix one of these on their 4.6lt ?

    Cheers and thanks in advance

OK, After some more investigation I have found that the oil leak is in the front timing cover it what seems to be the end of the oil pump? there is a cir clip in the end of it and its next to a welsh plug ?

It seems to get to it I would need to remove the coolant hose's, the oil filter and the oil pipes ? presuming that when I did that can it be repaired ?

    Any Help ?

    Cheers

I have a feeling that this is the same plug that actually blew/fell out of p38arover's RR a while ago.

If it is the same plug, then you might be better off removing the front cover/oil pump assy & repairing it on the bench. The last thing you want is this plug coming out (= no oil pressure).

    HI Again,

Here is a pic of the New timing cover, Its the One with the Cir-clip in it just above the welsh plug ?!?!? Can any one give me any info on what can be done ? I have been unable to get my P38 Rave working would any one be able to take a look for me and see if that part of the oil pump has a O ring on it or is fixible in the car ?? Or do I bite the bullet and replace the whole timing cover and pull the front of the engine apart ?

Cheers and Happy New YEar !

If I recall correctly, there is an O-ring in the alloy plug that is held in by the circlip.

Having had the circlip come out on mine last year, I really recommend this repair be done on the bench. Mine had been pulled sin 2002 and I suspect the circlip was not refitted properly.

However, it might be accessible from under the RH wheel arch if you take the wheel arch liner out.

When the circlip comes out, the alloy plug is ejected along with the oil pressure relief valve - along with all the engine oil in very short order!

If you decide to go the new pump route, let me know, I have a brand new spare in the garage. They ain't cheap!

If you replace the cover it will be the later cover and the oil pressure switch will come with it. It is a different thread on the later cover so you can't use the old oil pressure switch. However, the connector is different so you will have to adapt something to fit. Ideally, get a plug from a fuel injector that has a bit of wire still on it and spl;ice it to the oli pressure wiring.

Before you do all that, are you positive it isn't the oil pressure switch. There is a known problem with the early switches and a TSB to cover it. They leak and quite badly at times. Mine did.

    Thanks Ron,

When you say oil switch are you refering to the one just above ? It could be, but from the top I can see the oil welling up in the bottom of that cir-clip, and when I get under and look up I can see the oil switch and no oil running down from under it ?!?!?! I will try taking the liner out as you suggested !

The oil pressure switch is the item above the circlip in your pic. That switch is for the Thor engine and your GEMS connector won't fit. The old switch has a different thread so you have to use the switch that comes with the cover if you replace the cover. Is that your new cover?

It sounds like the O-ring in yours has gone. I'll boot my PC up shortly and get the O-ring part number for you - unless you have MicroCat on yours.

The cover belongs to Rovacraft, I borowed it for refrence. Thanks for your help, is the O ring replacable without removing the cover ? I have full access to workshop facilities if need be, but would rather not get into removing all the front of the engine if I don't have to !

    No I dont have Microcat.

    Thanks again
