    Question 07 Defender Air Conditioning

Now that there are a few of these on the forum, I thought I'd ask the question...

When the A/C starts it is initially cold enough to give me minor frostbite on my gearchange hand which spends a lot of time in front of the vents. After 15 minutes or so the A/C then seems to just shut off - not entirely, but mostly. There is still cool-ish air blowing out the vent, but I usually have to up the fan speed to '2' in order to keep cool. Even doing this however, it is apparent that the actual temperature of the air blowing in is nowhere near as cold as when it started.

Does this happen in other's vehicles? I am wondering if there is a fault or is the system programmed to just shutdown when it thinks it's reached the desired temperature?

Not that I have any idea with the fender but it sounds like the core is icing up.

Does it do it if you have a bit of heat mixed in?

That was my first thought but I can't say I know enough about A/C to be sure. I have occasionally had to mix in some heat because the initial temperature is so cold but I always have to turn it back down because things heat up.

Is the internal/external air intake device working? I know that makes quite a difference to AC temps. Of course in the past there was no way of altering this

Thanks - I might do that. It's obviously going to be a query for the stealer at first service, but I am, as I'm sure all new Defender owners are, going through a bit of a "is this normal?" learning phase.

Do you mean the recirculation switch? All the controls in the new Defender are basic, manual ones (thank goodness) and the recirc. - fresh air switch feels fine and I can hear and feel the difference when it's switched.

Incidentally, the new ventilation system does seem pretty leaky. Air comes out through all vents to some degree no matter which way the switches are set. For example, on any setting there is always some air leaking out the footwell vents.
