Disconnect the battery and check the starter motor terminals. Clean and re-tighten them.
I've put spring washers on mine to stop this happening to me (again)!
My 1998 300tdi disco occasionally will not turn over starter motor on turning of key. Like last evening - car sat all day in heat and when tried to start nothing - no kick into starter motor - nothing. Tried 3-4 times and then kicked over easily. No problems with battery as is new(ish). It doesn't sound like a 'stuck' starter motor as there is no preliminary kick sound - but then again my knowledge of these things is limited...
What do you blokes who know a lot reckon? Contact points?(If so how easy or otherwise to repair by novice?)

do you have a factory alarm ?
the starting circuit goes through the alarm module so if it is intermittent it could cause a problem.
most likely something else but worth condsidering

I heard there was a bypass plug you can get for the alarm ECU, or alternativley there are a couple of pins you can put a link in to bypass the starting circuit. There's some old threads on here about it.
I was looking at carrying one of these bypass plugs in the spares kit myself, because I've already had one alarm ECU fail. Not a good thing to have happen in a remote area. However not been able to source one. Can anyone help ?
The alarm ECU is up under the passengers side top kick panel - it's a green box. There are a couple of connectors to it. I found you can actually unplug the ECU and everyting in the car will still work - except the alarms, central locking ( not that important in an emergency ) and starting circuit. ( quite important )
Another device that can apparently cause starting issues is dry joints in this "SPIDER" thing which is an immobiliser fitted behind the heater controls. However i'm not too sure about that or which Oz Disco models it was fitted to.. Maybe someone else can advise. Some have removed this and resoldered it which apparently solves the issue. Maybe do a search on "spider".

oh -- the dog problem ... that's easy if you just lock the car using the key (not the remote ), the ultrasonic movement sensors will be disabled....door and bonnet sensors etc will still be active.
I have the same problem. replaced the starter motor and all sweet
The electrician tested the old starter and was kaput
cheers
It does sound like the spider problem. It is behind your heater controls LR did bring out a bypass plug because of the trouble with it part #AMR 4956 I think. I am going to join the wires from pins (2 to 3 is for the V8 only I think), 4 to 8 and 6 to 10. (According to the bypass plug information given to me ) Alternatively you could just get the bypass plug .
Next time it does it check to see if there is power to the starter solenoid, Intake pipe is in the way, but undo the hose clamp and swing out of the way. This will confirm if it is a spider problem
Don't know if the 98's had the spider or not though. Will be doing it to my '96, as mine will just die for no reason and checked had no power to fuel cut off solenoid, have previously ran a power wire from ignition to starter solenoid because mine was tempermental at starting too as it also had no power to starter solenoid.

pretty much tied up with work so will have to be put on back burner as a job to look at. My auto electrician brothe rin law may take a look but at moment he's away.

if all the connections are ok, (used to have intermittant starting problems with a Jeep, always a dodgy connection between the battery and the solenoid) the starter may be polling. This is where there is sufficient bearing wear for the air gap to be reduced and the thing just stalls.
Often the symptoms are as you describe.
